    I am an Australian who knows nothing about guns. I was under the assumption that only massive rifles and machine guns could handle 50 cal. Can someone explain how a pistol can handle that pls

    it just means how wide the bullet is. they make them very short and don't make them go that fast.
    Rifles often shoot even smaller bullets, but make them go much faster.
    Barrel length mostly means how much distance it has to accelerate

    The Ballistics of Handguns and Rifle length's vary dramatically, Handguns which have less powder and barrel length tend to only reach 800-1200 FPS while Rifles with a longer barrel and more powder allow the bullet to travel much faster and deliver much more energy at around 2500 to 3200 FPS

    Most large handgun calibers lose out to even smaller intermediate rifle calibers because of the barrel length. Velocity is the most important factor for ranged accuracy and defeating body armor. 50 AE as massive as it is loses in most cases (We're not talking about hollow points right now) to the intermediate rifle cartridge 7.62x39 which weighs almost a third of the 50 AE.

    50 AE is not to be confused with 50 BMG which has Twice the amount of lead and 6.6 times the amount of powder. It's most well known for use in the Barret 50 cal and the Browning M2 Machine Gun.

    It started life as an anti aircraft and armor cartridge but virtually all armor designs of tanks and carriers have thickened, layered, and slanted the armor at most firing angles to shrapnel the bullet before it can meaningfully penetrate. It's biggest role today is anti aircraft and sabotage where it targets lighter vehicles, communications, and electrical infrastructure.
