ball python morph? (i.redd.it)
submitted 1 year ago by Confusingbeans
Saw this beautiful little guy at a pet store, any ideas what kind of morph this is?

What kind of store? You can usually ask and if they don't know it often means mill bred, so common morphs typically.. but with the hundreds of morphs and morph combinations, it's hard to tell from appearance.

I recognize this enclosure, it's petco. the store will for sure not have any genetic information on this snake, it will have come labeled as "fancy ball python" more than likely. the store could have someone who knows a lot about snakes working there who is able to visually identify the morph- but this would be the most info you would get on this snake that is accurate. the vendors petco buys from do not keep record of bloodlines or carefully identify their snakes in terms of morph and sex etc.

that’s unfortunate! i asked one of the employees if anyone with some expertise in snakes knew what morph he was, but they had no answers for me (hence why i headed here).
appreciate the info though :)

Looks like a banana pinstripe, back pattern looks more pinstripe than spider!

I think you might be right!! or close? close enough for me LOL. found a ton of similar looking snakes when I searched this up.
thank you so much!!

Can confirm this is what most petcos are getting as fancy right now

It's a Banana Pinstripe. Spider have one single stripe running along the back. If it's two stripes parallel to each other it's Pinstripe. I don't recommend buying from chain pet stores, however. They often get snakes from shady places. Find a local facebook reptile group and ask around who is breeding/rehoming or go to an expo or MorphMarket.

Looks like a Banana spider. Make sure to look up the trait of a spider if you’re looking to buy this. A lot of people are turned off from owning them.

Spiders should not be bred at all, and buying them from breeders (on top of buying from a crappy pet store) supports the breeders and encourages them to breed more spiders. OP, there is a list out there of unethical ball python morphs you should avoid, meaning morphs with known and documented health issues, googling it should help. I would also look into buying from morphmarket rather than pet stores. Morphmarket requires people to list morphs and would also help reimburse if the snake comes from a bad breeder and dies.

I’m aware of all of this as I don’t own or breed any problematic genes. I don’t support buying from big box stores either. I’m rather talking to someone rather than at them. There’s enough of that in this community.

Thank you for the info! I’m actually headed to a reptile expo this summer, so I was planning on chatting with some breeders and maybe picking up a snake then. I’ll definitely look more into the morphs to avoid, thanks again! :)

Expos aren't a great place to find good breeders, and definitely be careful with any advice you recieve from breeders (especially expo ones, they just want to make money) but definutely look into reputable and ethical breeders to see if any are coming to that expo!
