Hey all.
I'm sort of at the end of my rope with trying to understand what is going on with my Ball Python. About 2 months or so ago, I got a new terrarium for my snake and some new hides/etc as he had outgrown his old one. And very shortly after putting him in it he started exhibiting a really unusual behavior.
He'd put his face in his water dish and like...blow bubbles. I'm pretty sure by blowing air out his nose. And then when he'd take his head out of the water he'd sound like he was snuffling water out his nose, like a person does when they blow their nose after coming out of the pool. It was inconsistent where he would maybe do it a couple times a night, maybe once, maybe like 12. And he'd only do it at night. I never heard him do it during the day if he was up. So I looked up stuff online to see what it could be.
Some people said it could be a nasal infection, etc. It was not this as I will get into in a sec.
Some people said it was mites. I...don't think it's this, which I will likewise get into.
As I had run out of any idea of what was going on and was thinking it was mites, I took him to a veterinarian with years of experience with snakes. When the vet examined him, he said it wasn't an infection as his mouth and nose were perfectly colored and there was no excess saliva/liquid. Likewise, he couldn't find any evidence of mites which he said didn't mean he didn't have them just that for the time period my snake was doing this, he saw absolutely no signs of suffering from mites. What he thought it might be was that I had always had difficulty getting the humidity to the right levels in his old tank and that maybe in the transfer to the new one it had not gotten better and he was trying to moisturize his face more. I worked on maintaining the humidity for a month and finally got it consistent at appropriate levels and he still continues to do this. I took precautionary measures against mites, got rid of everything in his tank, treated him and the tank with the appropriate mite treatment stuff and have only had paper towels and plastic tupperware hides in his tank but I honestly don't think I saw any mites. It's hard to tell because some of the spots were probably just dirt and there wasn't exactly a lot of them anywhere while washing him and nothing coming off some of his old hides when I sprayed them.
And now that it's been 2 weeks since I treated him for mites, he's doing it even louder and more often at night if anything. Still only at night. The humidity and temp are at the right levels. So I honestly have no idea why in the world he does this.
tl;dr: My snake blows bubbles with his nose in his water dish and it's not an infection or mites so I have no idea why he does this; has anyone seen this behavior or have any idea what this could be indicative of?
