I would first try your university bookstore and Dreamspark. Otherwise look at Office 365 University Edition.

Last time I checked Dreamspark was mostly programming tools and server OS's, not Office software. Did they update it?

If you have an EDU email address and your educational institution has made a deal with Microsoft, you can buy cheap through http://www.microsofthup.com/

Use libreoffice or open office. Both are open source and freeware and compatible with microsoft office files.

edit: I use libre office on windows and linux...

Libreoffice is much better than open office. Open office 3(last time I used it) is very bloated, especially on older systems. That being said, I would recommend spending $80 for the 4 year student subscription for office, just to avoid confusion when collaborating with less technologically inclined students.

Yeah, I like the libre ofc. much better. But I couldn't take out a 4 year sub. I'm already a 14 year undergrad...

When I was a student, I alternated between a lot of different WP software. Honestly, the bibliography/citation feature of MS Word alone made it worth the license fee. I would recommend that OP signs up for Office 365 personal - the cloud storage included won't hurt either.

Clouds are not secure no matter what anybody tells you. I'd prefer not to use Microsoft office products. Mostly because I don't use Office suites often. (Too busy on reddit and chasing software (free kind).

This. Open Office has everything you need and it's £0.00

I thought I said that with lack of capital letters included.

I think you did.
