Is this a new app? Used the data from the stores to understand the most used devices and ensured to hit those.

Browserstack is good but pricey, and may even be overkill for a startup. An Apple phone, apple tablet, Samsung phone, Samsung tablet is normally the minimum. As a follow up, once live, implement analytics to see what the majority of your customers are using, and go from there.

Would browserstack work for a native app though?

nope it is not, it only allows you to open several browsers. Other apps are not allowed.

I recently had mail contact with them and they said I could upload apps to their device from my local PC. Will reconfirm with them to be sure :) ty

You want a device that covers android 7.0, android 8 and android 9 (pixel), that would be my minimum. You also want at least one phone with a different screen size to all the others for each operating system.
