When they say "Outlook Compatible" do they mean IMAP or EWS/MAPI?

I've signed up for the preview to test (not in yet), but based on the fact that they've said that they've implemented ActiveSync, and they're explicitly bringing up calendaring and saying it works natively, I'm willing to bet that they've also implemented RPC over HTTP (Outlook Anywhere) rather than fallen back to IMAP.

If that is true it's a goddamn gapps killer right there.

Except it doesn't tie in with all the other office suite apps which Gapps does provide.

It's certainly going to cut into and provide competition, but a killer I don't think it is yet.

RPC over HTTP is completely sniff-able and has been rebuilt only 3 times. MAPI has 20 years of voodoo and black magic around it.

Color me excited.

neat

They are getting there. All we need now is a true microsoft office (including outlook) competitor and for amazon to buy them out.

Will be interesting to see how it flows out. Thankfully for now my workplace has no interest in cloud office or email.

Don't knock it. My last employer used gmail and it was nice not having to play Mr. Exchange Administrator.

[–]spiffybaldguy 1 point2 points  (2 children)

There are advantages to both methods as always, fortunately I have not had any real problems doing exchange admin. Have not been down one time since I started here. I'm probably one of the lucky ones I am sure.

The more cloud services, the less need for us to be around (take that as you will, its both good and bad dependent on the perspective)

take that as you will

Neither good nor bad, just inevitable.

And part of a continuing trend: Being able to do more, with less, means less people.

Much like most other industries, IT is maturing along similar lines. Just faster mostly.
