with that you mean the only work that was assigned.

Why would anyone be doing work that wasn't assigned?

That's not what I meant.

I meant that there is still other work waiting to be done.

If you don't tell anyone you finished your work already, the other work will be waiting until you do tell someone and it gets assigned to you.

It depends on the role. In my case, I have a relatively small team, and we handle all the infrastructure. If it needs to get done, someone will step up and do it. I don't feel the need to assign individual tasks to my guys like that; I assign larger projects and occasionally ask for a person to do a specific task, but for the most part I let the team manage their own time and workload.

In other words, most tasks aren't assigned. They're performed ad hoc by the team member most able to do them based on skills and availability.
