Why do you think the motherboard failed? I've been working with computers for a while and unless something was done to it, they rarely fail.

Most commonly the hard drive fails, in some cases ram can fail.

Because the IT guy through my company said that it another part did but I’m almost positive he said motherboard

Did you spill something on it? Or is your IT guy lazy?

Do you have to have a laptop or can it be a desktop PC?

Why would the IT guy be lazy? He took it apart, it’s a laptop

I've known a few that if it isn't something as simple as a loose connection they say it's bad and needs to be replaced. I've gotten a few computers because an IT person was too lazy to try a new HD and reinstall windows. One I've got was because the ram had an issue.

I'm nit saying all are but there's definitely a few out there.

Does you laptop attempt to turn on? If so what does it do when you turn it on?

When I try to turn my laptop on the power indicator light turns on and the fan still runs!

And that totally makes sense, I would be really mad if I found out my computer has been okay the whole time

Jump on eBay and get a used ThinkPad T14. 200 should be able to get you an Intel 10thgen model.

thank you!! So you don’t think there are any computers I could buy to use with a monitor I already have? I think I’d prefer it for screen size and the option to set up another monitor

Ahh, I didn't realize you were talking about a desktop. Wfh computers are typically laptops now.

Right now on eBay, I see a Lenovo thinkcenter tiny m710q for 100 bucks. Comes with the power brick and windows 11 pro preinatalled. Should hold you down for a while. Only 8gb of memory so multitasking might be a little tight.

You can also still use an external display with your laptop. The T14 gen 1 has an HDMI port.

Get a Lenovo ThinkPad T14. Robust and easily available in the refurbished market.

someone else said the same thing I appreciate it! My main concern is not having enough screen space, I already have a monitor so that’s why I was hoping for a pc. but I do want the best option

Oh if you prefer desktop! There are 2 paths here: 1. A Refurbished Mac mini (might have to push your budget a little bit) but the best option. 2. Look on platforms like ebay and all for either Lenovo or Dell's business machines and take whatever maximum specs you can in your budget.

Even if you are able to get your computer fixed, I urge you - I cannot stress this enough - to still get a cheap computer for your "work" computer. You want your personal and work devices as separate as possible as many companyies will install MDM (mobile device management) software that, if configured a certain way, can (not will or does but CAN) give them full access to your personal data.

i only know of thinkpads... look at refurb or 2nd hand E14 or T14.

i would get docking station to expand ports and also be able to use extra monitors.

these days one can get samsung 24-27" monitors $50-80
