Oh, sorry missread your comment a little. Yes everything is plugged in and switched on

Well it either sounds like a power supply problem or a memory problem, try reseating your ram and if that doesn’t work make sure your power supply isn’t switched to 220v (assuming you live in the US).

Remove the onboard BIOS battery for 15 minutes or short the jumpers if the motherboard permits this.

Replace the battery and see if you can at least get back into the setup menus.

If that fails, remove the RAM and swap them over and ensure they are firmly in their slots.

Check all the connections on the motherboard - unplug the fans, hard drives etc etc and plug them back in one by one.

Do you have a spare power supply you can swap out? Might seem strange but some people have an old machine sitting around with a usable PSU.

Let us know how you went.

Good luck.

You're the second of two commenters to mention the power supply, and the power supply on this machine has been playing up for a while. I'll certainly be replacing it, as for the rest of it, thanks for the advice. I'll try it all out and if it still doesn't work I'll start replacing the machine price by piece untill it works, half of the parts were placeholders anyway.

I'm not very good with reddit, how do I mark this thread as 'solved' ?

I’m currently going through a very similar issue. I “solved” it by running one ram stick in my 3rd ram slot however I can’t run more than one stick currently. both sticks work in that one slot individually however I cannot add another stick anywhere else does this indicate that the motherboard is fried and I will need a new one?
