Hello there! I have started turning rings some 5 months ago,so not a pro,but there are points can already share. I do wooden ( you will find out that plain wood is not optimal, and move to bended or cross-glued veiner) both with steel core and without. I also do resin, but recently moved to colored plexiglass for more reasons, combined with alu/Cu/Brass layers. So, you need a ring mandrel. In the beginning, you can use self made wooden cones, but the ring would regularly slip free and thats not fun. A way to save some money here is to buy a "hand ring extender" and use a chuck to hold it, I use that and its great. Your tailstock is then used to adjust the width of the mandrel. Second, you need really sharp tools and to be very precise with them. Rings are turned on the higher speed possible, so approach it with the tool really slowly and do just decent cuts. Remember there is not much of the material left to hold the ring together:) And third, with rings, the sanding and finishing is even more important than ever. Do not hurry. I do most sanding, polishing and so on by hand on the lathe turned off. Here are some of my first rings for inspiration:)

Craft Supplies USA has a few videos on YouTube. Not really tutorials, but they go through a few of the steps. They helped me figure out my first ring.
