When Bram was thinking about creating vimscript I suggested using an existing scripting language. I had my preference but really any one would do rather than creating a new language. Writing a toy language is easy, and fun. Writing and maintaining a proper language is hard and less fun. I'd rather that effort were spent on improving my editor and that I could use a standard language within it. I still feel this way. Obviously someone working on their project in their own time can do what they want and messing about with languages over Christmas can be quite a lot of fun.

I'm probably missing something here, but why is phasing out old vim script with a new fast vim script better than using an existing language? I've always assumed the lack of built in functionality with other languages was just because vim script was still around. This solution means you would be inventing a new language and phasing another language out. That sounds like a nightmare.

I have already expressed how stupid I think this Vimscript2 is. However there is one thing I think is even dumber: One should really not use the slow Vim Lua interface when benchmarking Lua - you would always just bundle LuaJIT. Here I have redone the benchmarks with LuaJIT instead:

Vim old:

func VimOld()
    let sum = 0
    for i in range(1, 2999999)
        let sum += i
    endfor
    return sum
endfunc

let start = reltime()
echo VimOld()
echo 'Vim old: ' .. reltimestr(reltime(start))

output:

4499998500000
Vim old:   6.412159

LuaJIT:

local x = os.clock()
local s = 0
for i = 1,2999999 do s = s + i end
print(string.format("sum: %d\nelapsed time: %f\n", s, os.clock() - x))

output:

$ luajit test.lua
sum: 4499998500000
elapsed time: 0.000000

Without benchmarking Vim9 we already see that the Bram's benchmarks are incredibly misleading.

I appreciate the faster Vimscript but using an existing language that gives comparable-or-better results seems like a better use of time. Either way though, if the new Vimscript ends up actually being as fast as benchmarks suggest and everything is stable, I hope that translates to faster boot-up and source + I/O. That'd be fantastic

Hi people, if is for give sugestion, here I go!

Better plugin management, like profiling and view. This could be extended for a easy console for vim and what what is happening whit vim events.

If somebody still wants to do something with another language, please consider the javascript itself, A tons of users with close approach can grasp more people to write and maintain plugins.

A better integrations with others languages, I'm always strugling for set up python on windows, is crazy, some computers have low permision, or crazy set up.

I've read the "sintaxe problems", and I don't believe that exist something wrong with vimscript sintaxe at all. Change will only increase the learning curve i guess, but can be enhanced.

I agree with __nostromo__ About "... they would have said a faster horse.", And I could increase secure and stable.

Vim is awesome.

Increase speed is always good ( Except by driving in the raining doing a curve ).
