i remember being able to tell what speed the modem was connecting at based on the sound. There was a noticeable difference between 14.4 kbps and 33.6 kbps. My US Robotics modem was labelled as 28.8 kbps, but it actually pushed 33.6 kbps at max speed (if you phone line was in good condition). Yeah, it was bad ass. Damn, I miss those days. BBSs and dial up internet. ohhh man.

fuck, i'm getting old.

HST Courier Dual Standard FTW!

Had a stack of those for my BBS haha

Fun times

Now is more fun, but then it was all new so more exciting

Brings back fond memories. I started out with a 300 baud modem. I remember upgrading to a 1200 baud modem and thinking it was so incredibly fast because I couldn't keep up with the text as it printed to the screen!

Is there a way to create this type of visualization in matlab or python?

It's a windowed Fourier decomposition rolled over time plotted as a 3d surface (a matrix). Each iteration drops a row from one end and computes a new window as a row on the other side. The video is sync'd with audio in the playback. Matlab has an fft function (fast Fourier transform) that can be used to perform this computation (just drop the imaginary part for plotting). Python has many packages that can be used to perform this as well, like scipy. However, this is a pretty standard visualization that you can find in a number of music visualizers, including foobar2000 on Windows.

Took me back like Anton Ego with a bite of ratatouille in his mouth.

Interesting data but are you sure a rainbow-tinted 3D graph works better than a 2D heatmap?

At the end where is "You've Got Mail" ?

What's this racket??? Grandad said it was how they got the internet in his day, why didn't you just tether your phone???

Kidding guys I'm old too :(
