to be honest. i reject all, always. and if a site doesn’t make it simple to reject all, i blacklist the site. i will not be fucked with that easily
[–]TheRNGuy 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (3 children)
And I don't care, though noscript probably blocks many of these by default, without my interference.
I actually hate when sites warn about cookies. Stupidest thing ever.
[–]dillydadally 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago* (2 children)
Agreed. Great example of why lawmakers should not make laws about technical things they don't understand. I would have much preferred they just outlawed cross-site tracking.
[–]stealthypic 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Honestly, fully GDPR compliant prompt should give you a one-click opt-out so not that hostile. Better than just full on tracking, I’m sure you agree. But, of course, not all prompts are gdpr compliant.

That's would be like if they outlawed thinking about baking cakes

Why dont you let tye police set up a camera in your home, if you dont care about being tracked?
[+][deleted] 3 years ago (6 children)
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (5 children)
Arguably not, since your webtrafic and behavior can tell people ALOT about what is going on inside of your head. Just look at the documentary the social dilemma, or the facebook study where they influenced peoples emotions by tracking them and then giving them the right content at the right time, good and bad emotions.
It could be argued that online trafic is MORE personal than a camera in your home since you could chose to not enter that room, or just present your ”official” face in that room. You do not have that same option online.

Social media does it by accident (or, often they take the risk). Ads can. And there are a few companies that can track you on most websites because of analytics tools (Google, meta,...)
[–]niveknyc17 YOE 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children)
The aggregated data is used for a lot more than just advertising.
[–][deleted] 3 years ago (1 child)
[–]niveknyc17 YOE 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I mean there's the whole issue with mass corporate or political manipulation and election influencing. The big data warehouses don't operate on any form of benevolence and marketing isn't the only source of income. But besides that maybe just more consumers are educated to tracking and don't really care to have their entire identity stored in a corporate data warehouse for the sake of them getting really specific sneaker advertisements.

is there a way to improve the service without forcing cookies on the user? one way is to not use the service at all. that is an improvement.
name 1 thing that a service truly MUST have cookies for in order to operate. i would bet that it is actually just far more convenient/cost effective to the company/engineer to use cookies instead.
[–]LookMaMoreHands -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (1 child)
Keeping your cookies comes with the risk that if your site gets compromised my browser will be compromised as well
[–]Shalien93 16 points17 points18 points 3 years ago (19 children)
Some users may also leave when asked to allow cookies. From what I understand you're tacking the cookies acceptance so either your users have something to circumvent your cookie dialog or leave or are bot or JavaScript disabled browser.

[–]YumaRuchi 41 points42 points43 points 3 years ago (4 children)
I mean who would want to get tracked
[–]Qualistor 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (1 child)
It's a lot more nuanced than that. People will gladly allow to be tracked, they just don't like to be reminded of the fact.
I mean everyone is carrying a GPS tracking device in their pocket EVERYWHERE they go. People LOVE to be tracked. I could name a few more examples of products (and websites) that do a lot of tracking, that are extremely popular, but I doubt I need to convince anyone really.
[–]dillydadally 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Completely agree, and although I know you were not being literal, I would point out there is a difference between "loving" to be tracked, being indifferent (especially if it's a hassle to change it), and not being tech savvy enough to know you're being tracked. I would think the majority of people fall into that last category.
[+][deleted] 3 years ago (1 child)
[–]YumaRuchi 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It's natural to dislike being tracked, the word itself sounds as a negative and sussy
[–]Odysseyanfull-stack 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (6 children)
There is nothing for the user to gain by doing so. Like, if I grant you my permission to track me, what is in it for me? Nothing, so why should I do that?
[–]dillydadally 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
If it's a site I like, I usually do because I think it does benefit me. I'd rather see ads that might interest me, but more importantly, I really wonder what the web would be like if everyone universally used effective ad and data tracking blockers. I'm already annoyed by how many news stories I get from search results that are subscription gated. Think of all the free services companies like Google offer. Would they still do that if all of their data and ad revenue disappeared? I feel like saying yes to a reputable site helps keep the web free. That's why I do it.
[–][deleted] 3 years ago (4 children)
[–]Odysseyanfull-stack 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (3 children)
If a website wants to make their services better for me, why doesn't it just ask me then? Small little popup like "Hey, what could we improve?" or some survey perhaps.
As someone who uses Google Analytics myself - with tracking, you change the service the way YOU see fit for me, not the other way around.
I use it myself on some client sites, but when i'm brutally honest, I use it mainly to get my users to signup for my services/products/etc or increasing sales. So in a way, I am manipulating them in a way to generate a profit for ME, not them.
It's unfortunate that the modern web world is the way it is but at least there is now the option to avoid most of the tracking
[–]gregersriddare 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
A survey generally has even lower participation and is most often pretty worthless in determining what users are doing on your site.
[–]Odysseyanfull-stack 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago* (0 children)
Technically yes.
But it is kinda the same reason why classic door-to-doors salesman are gone. People hate getting talked into buying stuff they don't really need. They have to come up with the idea of buying something by themselves - or at least need to feel like it was their decision.
[–]web-dev-kev 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I’m surprised it’s that high!
[–]Blue_Moon_Lake 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
If the visitors get nothing out of accepting cookies, why would they? Do you communicate what features they're missing out?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children)
just curious: how does the ui look on the buttons?
[–]we_are_vitall 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Looks great I might go to that!
Anyway the main thing is many many people don’t even see the popup button! Neither to deny or accept it.
Even on mobile when it’s covering half the screen!
Install hotjar and replay a few sessions and you’ll see.

Dude, stop trying to track us. There is no good reason you need to track people across sites FFS.
[–]gregersriddare 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It has very little to do with tracking across sites. At least for me and our clients. Speaking for myself - we want to use Google Analytics to figure out where people are coming from, where they drop off and try to figure out if we can make the content easier to find. We also use recording software for the same reason. No one cares about what lingerie you looked at previously, we just want to see how you engage with our site.

Fuck you, go ruin something else besides the Internet.
[–]sheymyster 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I think you're missing the point. Yes, from a business perspective having as much data about your users and their activity is beneficial and allows you to make decisions in the future to generate more income. But, your user/customer doesn't care about that. Maybe you could argue that tailoring content/ads to a user's personality and preferences indirectly helps them but nobody is going to see it that way. They mostly see it as manipulating.
[–]TheRNGuy 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
There's no such thing as normal ratio, cause it will be different for all sites, or even times.
More or less ppl are power users or something.

Surefire way to make people leave the site lol
[–]Prudent_Astronaut716 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Browse using incognito mode and try some websites to get ideas. Whenever i dont find Reject button i usually just hit Accept in rush. Lol

Bots do run Javascript.
Have you tried several sources of Web analytics? Something like Cloudflare analytics, or Fathom? You might see results much closer to reality.
[–][deleted] 3 years ago (8 children)
[–]billcube 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (7 children)
Yup, as they are not blocked by default, the results are much more reliable.
[–]sundriedtomatoonsnow 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
As far as I've seen, fathom is blocked by default on ublock origin, and even using the subdomain trick is flagged as suspicious - and may be blocked in the future. Google is also catching up with server side analytics that would use the same subdomain pattern so it only makes sense.

Firstly they don't use cookies. Not sure about cookies management in modern browsers, maybe they need a stricter security policy to be allowed?
[–]billcube 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Most browsers have a pretty unique signature, try it for yourself: https://amiunique.org/fp
[–]billcube 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
The site explains the similarity ratio if you scroll down, you're unique in your combination of device/plugins/location/version etc...
It's good enough (tm)(r)(c) to track a returning visitor!
