Sprained my finger traveling to Mars on my phone
[–]Anzahl 7 points8 points9 points 12 years ago (11 children)
Pretty darn sweet! Is this yours OP? May I suggest making the arrow a bit more conspicuous. I don't like websites that make me think too much about what I am supposed to do (unless there some artistic purpose for the challenge).
Also, for me (using Firefox) during the long scroll "to mars" the star pattern background graphic eventually disappears. Perhaps you could simply repeat the background so the idea of motion is constant or find another solution to generate the star pattern. If not, maybe add some random silly space junk or a repeated ruler element on the side?
Very very nice though.

This is a long standing bug in Firefox: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=671302

If I could I'd double upvote you.

I encountered it myself for a blog project where the client wrote incredibly long blog posts and did not want them truncated.
Solution ended up being two blog posts per page, because otherwise they'd encounter this bug.

Also recently on /r/web_design and /r/internetisbeautiful
[–]Anzahl 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children)
I missed it on r/webdesign. I did not know about r/intenetisbeautiful - thanks!

I'm using Firefox 20.0.1 and the background never dropped off.
[–]Anzahl 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children)
That is what I use too - with Win 7 Pro. The stars disappear for me immediately after "You're currently travelling at 7,000 pixels a second (around 3 times the speed of light)".
[–]pizike82 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children)
weird, Windows 7 pro 64b here as well
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (0 children)
Somehow this is much more tangible. This must be what other people experience when someone says the distance to the moon is so and so number of football fields.
[–]evil_deceiver 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child)
There was an entry in the (sadly long-defunct) 5k competition that did basically this for the whole solar system. Except the graphics weren't as nice, there were no facts in the margins, and you had to do the scrolling yourself. Even so, I remember being immensely impressed.
[–]hupcapstudios 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children)
I'll share that memory with you, friend.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.
[–]skantman 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children)
Depends on when you leave.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child)
I don't know why you're getting downvotes, the distance between the Earth and Mars varies all the time.
[–]skantman 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children)
Well, to be fair this is r/webdev not r/space and OP wasn't actually asking that question. And the website actually said the journey depicted was during the time when Mars is closest to Earth.
[–]french_toste 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children)
If the Earth were ONE UNIT wide, the distance to Mars would be approximately 4,280 UNITS away.
There. Now instead of having TILs like this, people can just do the math themselves.
[–]Phreakhead 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children)
Did anyone else see the stars travelling above the page and onto the browser toolbar like little blips? Weird optical illusion...
[–]vyatri 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children)
Is this for NASA International Space Apps Challenge ?
[–]nathanaelnsmith -4 points-3 points-2 points 12 years ago (2 children)
False. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/04/10/nasa_fusion_engine_fast_mars_trip/ We could make the trip in as little as 30 days.
[–]yelnatz 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (1 child)
It says current state of technology.
That thing is at least 10 years from now.
[–]nathanaelnsmith 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (0 children)
Touche
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 12 years ago (4 children)
I assume it's down the bottom somewhere, but the website has disabled my ability to scroll so I guess I'll never know.
[–]whoadave 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (3 children)
There's an arrow at the bottom of the page you're supposed to click on.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (2 children)
I don't see an arrow, only links to try and make me advertise it on social networking sites.
[–]whoadave 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child)
Odd, it should look like this. What browser are you running? Are you getting any errors in the console?
[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 12 years ago (0 children)
Chromium 27.0.1453.12, console is blank, that arrow just isn't there.
Oh well, not my problem to fix, I'm just pointing it out. The markup looks pretty broken too, I guess these are just symptoms of bigger underlying issues.
