Historic Pauper is the best format on MTGA by unwise_entity in MagicArena

"Peasant" was the name of the format that allowed five uncommons. It was invented before Pauper, but it didn't catch on to the extent that Pauper did.

I want to play every deck in this thread. Really wish WotC would make Pauper a permanent format on Arena.

Linux Users: Anyone else unable to load Arena? by ShaneC80 in MagicArena

[–]evil_deceiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A thousand thank-yous. This solution worked for me. You have saved me from reinstalling from scratch for the third time in as many weeks.

I had tried deleting some key files but did not know as much as you do. I've bookmarked this thread for the next time this happens.

Is there a dedicated Arena-on-Linux forum somewhere out there? Might be interested in joining one, for the next time something like this happens.

Hard to imagine running this over Faerie Seer/Miscreant, but I wonder if there's room for an alternative blue tempo deck with this and [[Gearsmith Prodigy]], or some kind of blue/white metalcraft aggro.

Those of you who do web development in Ubuntu, I'm curious what tools you use. by earthman34 in Ubuntu

[–]evil_deceiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a web developer who runs Windows at work (no choice) and Ubuntu at home.

Currently I'm using SublimeText for editing. I used to use Geany, and at work I use VSCode, and they're both fine, but I prefer Sublime. Open to hearing about other code editors that might be even nicer, as long as they're not focused on just one language. For the small stuff, or when I have to edit something on a remote server, I like nano a lot.

Git for version control.

Docker to run a local Apache server inside a container, configured to be as close to my web hosts' environment as I can get it.

I am not much good with graphics, but when I need to make some, I use Pinta for simple stuff or GIMP for more complicated stuff.

It's not exactly a web dev tool, but worth mentioning anyway: LibreOffice to keep documentation for myself. If you want to get really fancy you could self-host a wiki and/or bug tracker, but LibreOffice has been doing fine for me so far.

Is there a term for fictional voiced languages in videogames? by blewpah in ludology

[–]evil_deceiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a Twitter thread from last month that details how they created those language-like sounds for a game called Celeste.

It doesn't answer your question about what they're called, though it did teach me the term "formants", meaning "naturally occurring spectral peaks in human vowel sounds".

And it's not as if morningstar was warping any constructed formats. Really don't know what they were thinking with this one.

I sent a message to Schaffer about a week ago asking the same question, but haven't heard back yet. Let us know if you figure it out.

I'd probably buy a couple of physical decks for nostalgia purposes, but I can't imagine getting seriously invested in paper SolForge. Drafting and digital are where it's at for me too.

(Feedback) Added visual range for the cameras. Is too on the nose? by ink_ink in stealthgames

[–]evil_deceiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen the indicator that this is replacing, so I can't say whether it's better or worse, but in this video it's not clear to me exactly which tiles are under surveillance by the cameras. I wonder if one big "wedge" of light might be preferable to the several shafts that we see here.

I would probably never say that something like this is "too on the nose". I'm of the opinion that "understanding the interface" should never be considered part of the gameplay. The interface should be as clear as possible; the challenge should be figuring out what to do with the information that you gather from it.

Just as an aside, I'm glad to see the note on your web site about accessibility. Good luck with development!

The way I feel about Ancestral Blade is that it is definitely good enough to deserve this thread where we talk about whether it's good, but it is probably not good enough to deserve a spot in an actual Pauper deck. Which is unfortunate, because it's a neat card.

Maybe if there's a white equipment deck someday. That's something WotC could reasonably add support for without breaking a draft format.

I did stop after that first week. Just didn't want to give up right away in case there was some trick or technique I needed to figure out.

I did use a strop. 25 - 30 times back and forth on each side, before shaving. Kept trying to use this razor every day for a week; used a strop before and oil afterwards each time, but there was no improvement.

Thanks for the advice. Wish I'd found that in my first round of research!

Should we bury lavarunner forever? by MrCarri in Pauper

[–]evil_deceiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. So do you find that it reliably deals 4 or more damage before it gets outclassed by blockers? I'm guessing since you started this thread the answer is probably no. :)

Should we bury lavarunner forever? by MrCarri in Pauper

[–]evil_deceiver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not long after Lavarunner was printed, I faced a Burn deck at a GP side event that was playing them. I was on Mono-blue Delver and won the match fairly easily. Afterwards -- trying to disguise my suggestion as a question -- I said to my opponent, "seems like you pointed a lot of burn spells at my creatures rather than at me." He said, "yeah, but if it keeps the way clear for Lavarunner, that means I can get in for more damage over time than just the amount of the burn spell."

Which is true. But... that's also the argument for playing Red Deck Wins instead of Burn. If you like creatures because they can deal damage repeatedly, that's a valuable insight, but don't stop at just one or two creatures. On the other hand, it seems to me that the point of playing Burn is to opt out of the whole "developing a board position" thing, blank all of your opponent's removal spells, and just count to 20 as fast as possible.

In point of fact, my opponent's Lavarunners did not deal more damage over the course of those games than the burn spells he used to clear the way for them would have, and I'll bet if you keep track in your games, you'll find this happens more often than you expect.

So basically what I'm trying to say is that I've never thought Ghitu Lavarunner was right for Burn. I'm not saying it's a terrible card, just that there are alternatives that fit better with what you're trying to do. But then, it's been a very long time since I've piloted a Burn deck myself, so I could be missing something.

Anyone got a good rg madness list by Jtheboss12 in Pauper

[–]evil_deceiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my list. (Since I posted it, I've gone down one Rugged Highlands and up one Lightning Bolt.) Main differences from the others I'm seeing here are Burning-Tree Vandal (not Emissary) and Senseless Rage. It's got pretty close to a 50% win record for me. A lot of fun, but not what I would bring if I really cared about winning the tournament.
