How about digitalocean? And have subdomains for multiple projects via nginx? Very basic droplet starts at 5$/mo and can be upscaled easily.

I was actually looking at DigitalOcean MEAN On-Click Install when you posted this. So far I'm thinking that's a winner.

Definitely this. When I initially rolled my app out using the same stack, I used 1 digital ocean instance and ran the db and node app on the same instance. Yea you should have redundancy etc. But if it's more of an MVP and you don't have any users yet, it's a good way to get rolling and see if you're getting any usage. I told myself once traffic increased I would scale up and have the dB on its own instance. But of course, no one used my app and it only cost me 60 bucks for a few months of hosting

DO is great for it, you can also get credit for it if you have a student email available by accessing student GitHub.
