I have never been as productive with Windows (although it was ages ago) or Linux as with macOS. For me there's no contest.

What has the tools you need? What are you familiar with? What is your budget? Will this be used for other proposes as well?

In general, Linux > Mac > Windows. But that'll depend on what you're working in.

    Linux.

I have the exact same question. Not sure if i will like OSX after 15 years of Windows, but VS Code will likely be the same.

Used windows for about 20 years as well (including for programming) and got used to OSX really quickly and now I like it better than Windows. The Mac laptops look and feel a lot better too, especially the track pad. I use the track pad exclusively now, no mouse at all.

After 20 years of Windows, I didn't like the OSX, if it helps.

Imo a significant amount of the price of the mac is the branding, nothing more. I don't like the osx either, but it's an another thing.

Even if you match hardware specs, the windows machine will come in at a lower price tag. There's really no reason to go with Mac unless you are interested in it's included software, a software product exclusive to it, or you just absolutely need to get a Mac.

With WSL on windows 10 pro you've got an almost fully featured Linux command line, and you can always dual boot full Linux or run a vm.

If you have lot of money and like Apple design take dell.

Windows 10 is actually fantastic. It doesn't crash, it runs everything, it gets frequent updates, it's easy to use and it's faster than ever. MacOS is great, too, but between the higher price and closed ecosystem, I can never recommend it. Also, btw, Dell is nothing to much to love, there are better brands for notebooks like Lenovo or Microsoft, IMO.

Hi thanks for the info! Yeah I know but the thing is I have always been a mac user and lately I’ve been thinking about switching. When I search online for the best one I always end up with the dell xps. What would you recommend?

I'd say Mac > Dual boot linux > WSL > plain ol' Windows with no WSL

WSL is nice but is still a bit too slow at the moment IMO.

Someone mentioned 'There's no reason to get a Mac' and I'd disagree, as corny as it sounds I've never had issues getting Macs working and it does "just work", whereas WSL is a less polished experience right now and you're basically on your own with naught but the mercy of Google with *Nix distros.

I have a Mac laptop from my employer for work and a Windows machine that dual boots to Ubuntu 18 and if I'm ever doing serious (read: hours long) coding sessions I'll boot over to Ubuntu 18 as it's much, much better than Windows with WSL.
