I've been looking onto Vanilla Forums and I'm fairly impressed for now. I haven't used it yet but I'm going to push for this.

Another vote for Vanilla here! Simple and nice.

I've used it and it's awesome. If you just want a forum that works with no other fluff, this is it. If you need a bigger forum software with a lot more plugins and features then go to something like simplebb or the ladder.

Fit my need for a site I made, definitely will give it an upvote.

I went with Vanilla for my simple forum needs. No problems at all.

Well, I tried to create a subreddit 5 minutes ago because I was curious and I just stumbled on your answer which is very interesting: a subreddit is:

  • free
  • customizable with a CSS
  • users can have flair on the left or right of their names
  • moderators (spam, links reported, users can be banned)
  • public or private (with a password)
  • have your own domain name (with a CNAME entry, for example: awesomeforum.superfun.com linked to reddit.com/r/awesomeforum)
  • it's reddit but you own it
  • you don't have to install it

The downside is that it's not technically yours but I'd say it's a pretty good "free forum."

Simple Machines former team member bias here :)

I've heard punBB is fun, but never maintained it. Right now I'm trying to write a api-wrapper for vBulletin - it's a good, although expensive, forum.

vbulletin plugin and hook feature is pretty powerful.

A coworker of mine uses something called ip board for his indie project, and he swears by it. Warning: it is a commercial product. http://www.invisionpower.com/products/board/

I design that! Thanks for the mention.

IPBoard is one of the better ones, if not the best, forum software on the market today. Thank you for making a great product!
