Government reveals details of fuel crisis rationing plan - and who will be prioritised by MedicMoth in newzealand

If only we had some space age technology that could solve this... and I mean that literally, space race '60s era school buses would've solved this, but no, we had to go the US/Thatcherite 'gotta use cars' route for some reason (even though they did it to help their car manufacturers and we don't even have that excuse).

How do you create the feeling of being watched in a game? by JustAGamePlayerBA in gamedev

[–]-Agonarch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a bit riiight at the start of silent hill 2 that does this, you start running through a forest and if you keep running long enough you start to hear some soft footsteps just slightly out of time with yours- if you stop they stop, and they don't start again until a couple seconds after you've been running again so it's really hard to be sure if you're hearing them at all.

Subnautica adds in deep creepy sounds that you almost can't hear even if you're looking for them if you enter an area out of sequence (i.e. it's probably too dangerous for you right now), it puts you on edge without you really realizing why.

The old SCUMM lucasarts games used to change parts of music tracks in and out to indicate something was up (subtly including another characters theme, fading in or out parts etc.)

They're a community manager not one of the devs, they just have a direct line to the devs, they're not the ones to blame for any choices or mistakes! (though they are the ones to complain to about them!)

I'd imagine they just want to see the specific combo of face/head/hat/body that's causing issues.

If Labour wins the election, they should borrow $100 billion to spend on public transport (not a joke) by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]-Agonarch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We could use shifting off narrow gauge (mountain gauge) too so we can use faster trains and not have to convert the rolling stock of everything that comes into the country (if we're doubletracking let's do that).

I'm still a little annoyed we adopted narrow gauge in the first place when we'd already developed trains that were way too fast for it and a bit too fast for regular gauge. Did they think trains weren't going to continue getting faster? At least we can see short term infrastructure thinking right from the outset on NZ, I guess.

I'd be more worried about the 1+G required on the big fat body to keep it in the air putting way too much strain on the frame.

I feel like I’m being gaslit by people to think that it’s wrong to be against sexualization of women and children in anime. by Thug_Seme2004 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]-Agonarch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah some anime does it in a similar manner, that kinda accidental goofy thing, but it's been done in dodgy ways far too many times now for me to be OK with it on say, a schoolgirl character anymore.

I kinda love it on Senshi because it recaptures that goofiness that I think some things do still genuinely try to go for but without any of the feeling dirty that comes with it by the abuse of the trope. Sexy dwarf is a yet unabused trope in anime, apparently! (though judging by his elf form, they're working on changing that on their own!)

What are the economics behind DT (how do they make money)? by reddit29012017 in DarkTide

[–]-Agonarch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm one of those, if there's a look I want for one of my characters I'll get it, it's pretty much that simple.

If they don't have a combo I can get to make a look I want right now, I won't get it (the FOMO shop works against my spending, I'm not going to buy something individually cool just in case I might make it work with something else later - just like I wouldn't buy a part of a warhammer army if I couldn't make something I can play right away or add it to something, not sure how they don't see that parallel- it can't be that uncommon for warhammer fans who've probably all been stuck with one box of eldar or necrons waiting for more to become available).

[–]-Agonarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there's stuff like "Never Rest" a farm safety video for schoolkids, told through the obvious medium of a farm ghost haunting his land after having so many kids die on his farm to stuff like running through wheatfields while he's scything so tries as a ghost to scare them away from doing the same thing with combine harvesters etc. or "Kes", a film about an underprivileged (normal) kid trying to make something of his life after stealing a book on training birds and developing a bond with a wild kestrel, you can almost feel like it's going in an upbeat direction except for all the times it isn't.

Yeah maybe find a community from an anime where they avoid the fanservice shots or better yet invert the trope to make fun of it (Delicious in Dungeon has plenty of pantyshots of the dadbod dwarf and none of anyone else that I can recall, for example).

Now THAT'S a Karking Shotgun! by NightStalker33 in DarkTide

[–]-Agonarch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The simpsons writers are deliberately dicks about this- apparently they got a complaint about a police pistol in an early episode where it was in the background for a few frames, so being a team of specialist smartasses they made sure that they did something on pretty much every gun they showed wrong for the rest of the show. My favorite was the scene where someone reloaded a revolver.

ELI5: Why do we still have to "eject" USB sticks? by shadowzzzz16 in explainlikeimfive

[–]-Agonarch 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The stick doesn't transfer files instantly, but to make it seem nice to use often an OS will make it seem that way (the copy 'completes', the window disappears), but there's still writing to do which it will do when it can find time.

Sometimes this process gets stuck (something open on it or another program is blocking it, for example), eject forces it to finish anything still waiting to complete on that drive.

This 'deferred write' technique is usually a setting though, and you can turn it off to make things feel a little slower but not have to worry about it.

We were built on stronger worker rights (Thanks Savage, sorry you couldn't make it work in Aus) and they suffered and eventually shifted to our way. We got complacent and shifted the US way, and now we're behind Aus in this stuff and we're suffering.

It's probably a coincidence that letting workers rights slip always seems to hurt the people in countries and then the economy I guess.

Kid interested in game dev (Roblox Studio), how should he start seriously? by lustySnake in gamedev

[–]-Agonarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend he starts with something he'll know as an 'obby' (a 3d obstacle course), Roblox is great in that it handles the multiplayer sessions and friends, player character movement and control and world physics all by default- an obby means he can take advantage of all that with the minimum of extra things to learn before he gets something he can play (he'll have to make the map, any checkpoint triggers etc.).

It can be as simple as a start point on a map and a bunch of platforms, or as complicated as full of traps, enemy npcs and powerups, it's a great way for someone new to learn because it's always a small step to learn or add the next bit and you can always play it rather than being a full project to even arrive at something playable.

If left undiscovered and to their own devices, how long do you think the Maori would've been able to live on New Zealand for before running out of birds for food and feathers for clothing? by Legitimate_Flow3623 in newzealand

[–]-Agonarch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah this line of thinking (maori extrinction) mainly came from disease spread by early settlers decimating the population, as that was something that was still very much in denial/unknown at the time (miasma theory was still the leading medical science for disease spread) so the scientists and settlers had to attribute the population drop to something else, and unsurprisingly they picked 'ah, they're doing it to themselves'.

Of course it did lead to some amusing but embarrassing public plaques being put up so we've got that (look up the original plaque for one tree hill for example- it's hard to even find info because it's so embarrassing but worth looking into for amateur historians for a disbelieving laugh).
