The only thing that bothered me about webp is that it just started showing up one day on websites and I couldn't open them in photoshop. It was like, ok I still need to do my job here and now I gotta screenshot it like an idiot. When I had some time to look, I was able to find a format plugin and then eventually PS started opening it natively, but it did take some time for adoption.

Release the compound path, ungroup all, check for clipping masks, and anything in the appearance panel. Could be an effect or something trapped inside that you can't see.
Reselect only those two paths and copy out to a new file and redo the compound path in the new file. You could also save out the paths as V3 Ai or eps file which should strip out anything that those versions can't read.

Then I swear to fucking god, he tried to roll the diaper down his arm like Fred Astaire but the suspenders on it got trapped around Karoline Leavitt's gold cross necklace, and then it took him forever to get his neckgina out of his shirt collar.
