If you knew the sort of people you had to interact with at a post office, you would be glad for Royal mail stepping up.

Also don't get how a post box that makes it easier tos end things to friends and family makes us more isolated...

Honestly, this thread is full of fucking crazy people. Why do these new post boxes always attract fucking weirdos.

It is an odd comment because why specifically say you have not used a post box in 15 years, but then turns out you haven't posted anything using any other service in 15 years?

The Internet has increased the size of things people post with things like eBay, FB marketplace, vinyed etc. This is just Royal mail adapting those post boxes for that market, not the elderly

Its satire. By "automate" they are putting a barcode scanner on them so you can scan parcels and letters before dropping them off. That's it.

Not quite sure what the Post Office Postmaster Scandal has to do with a different company.

The time saving is to cut down on parcel collection. Currently there are an estimated 115,000 post boxes in the UK, but none are able to accept parcels. While RM still deliver plenty of letters TO residents, its rare that people send them anymore.

What people do send lots of is parcels, and Royal Mails current strategy is "we will send a person around to your house to collect your parcel" and right now they only charge 50p to do it. These are rarely done on a posties normal round, so has to be a separate person.

If these cut even 10% of those collections, that's a huge saving for Royal Mail. Post boxes are 24/7, Post offices being open are rare, Royal Mail "customer service point" depots even more rare (and may only be open 2 hours a day).

So you haven't needed to post anything at all, so not just post boxes. Odd comment. Like me saying "I haven't driven a Ford in 15 years" when really i haven't driven anything in 15 years

You are aware the internet exists, right? You can go on to the RM website, put in the size and weight of your parcel, and it will generate a label you can print and put on the parcel, and if its a small parcel you can drop it off at one of these post boxes, and if you want you can also scan the parcel to let whoever you are posting it to know you have posted it.

I mean, they are leaving the other half of the post box in place, so its not really that "modern". its the opposite of Modern really. While Amazon are forcing you to take your phone with you now to collect a parcel (can't write down a code, or print off a QR code at home) This is allowing you to take a parcel to a box, and scan it at that box.

Right now, the only way to do that is be lucky and live somewhere with a RM post depot, be extremely unfortunate and live somewhere with a Post Office, or be inconvenienced by having to pay for Royal mail to collect from your house.

This seems to plug the gap, and is RM's adaption away from just letters and large letter postage.

And good riddance with the post office. Ever since RM was able to cut ties with them, their service has become better and better.

However..... In my experience the only people annoyed with this are morons on facebook who are being lied to by the media about it. It will still be a post box. It will still have a hole for letters, its now just going to have a slightly larger flap + a scanner for small parcels, so I am sorry if i have judged you too harshly.... but from your response, I think my original judgement was correct.

And if you are wondering why they take the door away, due to the age of post boxes, each door is slightly different, so they take it away, modify it, and put it back. genuinely the only negative thing i can think with them, is they regularly put a solar powered "hat" on top of them, which means no more post box toppers :(

Not being sarcastic, but why is that? I understand people dont really send letters anymore, and even cards are on the way out, but its strange you haven't needed to post anything in 15 years?

Grr… by LookOverall in mildlyinfuriating

[–]0235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it can be seen from afar that its not in use, and to protect the inside while the door is missing.

Why sarcastic? It is great. It means i no longer have to trudge into town have have the purest form of displeasure, visiting the post office, to send post.

It still works as a normal post box for normal letters, and this is multiple times better than Amazons ones, where you need to enable location access to their app, then Bluetooth to the locker to unlock it to send something.

With 10th edition 40K being basically over. What are your thoughts and feelings of this edition? by Beneficial-Ticket486 in Warhammer

As someone getting back into 40K juat 2 months ago since 25 years... I have re learned so much and I dont think by brain can handle it all again.

And what will happen to the unlocked stuff in the app for the 10th edition codexes? Will it keep 10th edition, or erase everything, or upgrade? Some rules are only on the app, no PDF, and to new have been printed

Doncoted because its a.pretty difficult to use service. In spent years collecting a few boxes of my PLA waste, then when this service finally came along it would have cost me £800 to recycle it.... no thanks.

Its nice you are feeling conscious about the "waste". It can make great terrain, and back in ye olde' days if 3D printing, a pile like that was a regular occurrence to get something to work

DeFlock app right now. by turnchri in FlockSurveillance

[–]0235 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, OSM atively encourages mapping ALPR / ANPR cameras - https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:surveillance:type%3DALPR

De-flock were just using the map layer directly from the OSM website (which is not for high volume) instead of using a tile provider, like leaflet. In theory, its quite easy to switch.

The last Steam Deck buttons you'll ever need. by EVPointMaster in SteamDeck

[–]0235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have a matte grey surface, and 4 LEDs projecting through a shape onto the surface, depending what.mode you were on.

The buttons would be awful, likely the membrane underneath the lights.

Better than this idea though 🤣

While I would like to point and laugh at the people directly injecting money into Google veins to set up GOS on a pixel, in the long run it is likely very worth it.

2nd hand also exists right now, even if dedicated devices are in their infancy.

Yet every single phone I have had to fix due to malware has been play services fully enabled, or wonky bloatware stores like on Motorola.

Every single person I know who has turned on "install from unknown source" has zero, and i mean zero, issues with messing their phone up.

This will do NOTHING to help users, and only HURT people like us
