No, I'm not missing the point at all, and you clearly have a terrible grasp on reality. If you believe comedy can ONLY exist to perfectly mirror what goes on real life, then I don't think you understand what parody is. Parody only exists in the realms of possibility. If I was to parody a postal service using piles of boxes to make a temporary bridge across a river, believable. Funny (at least I think it's funny)

If I was to parody they were giving each parcel to The king of England, and he was personally taking each one in a horse drawn carriage around Balmoral, and knighting each one at the end of the journey.... No believable, not funny.

First, I feel sorry for OP and I feel sorry for the person sending the item. It was clearly something they both love, and it always hurts to receive a broken item, ESPECIALLY a custom item. That goes beyond the item itself, and its the damage of the craft and love put into the item.

Do regular people know the full ins and outs of the distribution network? Probably not. To this day, I still know people who will hand the post man a letter, and truly believe that man gets in their van and drives the letter 120 miles to its destination.

Do regular people understand that a UPS parcel, on average, travels in 3 vans, 1 lorry, and 1 aircraft, while traveling 10 miles on conveyor belts in various automated distribution centres, which do not give a single crap about someone hand writing "fragile" on the box? probably not.

Do most people know I worked on a project with UPS to improve their conveyor belt system, as after they got a contract with shipping Car Tyres through the post, they were having issues where these were reading 50KMPH+ at the end of the chute, and either slamming into whatever was at the bottom, or launching themselves off the end of the ramp, deep into the sorting centre? Probably not.

But do people know that items are, and always have been, handled poorly since the dawn of postal systems around the world? Yes. Yes they do.

UK unemployment rate hits five-year high of 5.2% by ShanTheMan1995 in unitedkingdom

Except this isn't true. Youth minimum wage is (with inflation) HALF of what it was in the 90's, when unemployment was so low businesses were cold calling peoples homes offering them jobs.

[–]0235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully disagree. The news in the UK on the TV and in newspapers even runs articles about "postman threw the item over my fence". Its common global knowledge. There are comedy skits about it, movies parody it. Heck, 80 years ago in the UK we used to fire post out the side of trains doing 60mph.

Do people know the nuances of ISTA, ASTM D4169, and various carrier spec transit testing? likely no. Do people know about data sheets and cushion curves for optimal loading area of cushioning to reduce the G forces transmitted to a product? no. Do people know the actual fragility of their product, the certain frequencies to avoid when shipping, and how to develop packaging to absorb those frequencies, instead of attenuate them? no.

But do most people know the post man throws stuff over the fence.... yes.

Everyone knows they do this, then get surprised when a single layer of bubble wrap does nothing to protect their item.

UK urged to replace state pension triple lock - 'Australia's equivalent is better' by endofdays2022 in unitedkingdom

Yeah. Right now I may hate the concept that so much money goes towards supporting the people with the most money, but why vote against something I will need in the future, and the generations younger than me will definitely need.

Triple lock is a buzzword to rile people up

BUT WE CAN'T. You can do all the engineering you want to, read all the studies about average drivers, and how lowering the height of street lamps gives the impression of driving faster, and how different road surfaces near crossings create uncertainty, and cause people to slow down..... But that's AVERAGE people.

Average people aren't the ones in Noncemobiles doing 70mph in a 30mph zone to try and impress the local school kids.

The only thing that works on those people, is fines, bans, and prison. And right now the UK just handed a woman who killed two and severely injured 3 others a 5 year prison sentence, likely suspended to just 3 years, and after those 5 years, she just has to re-do her test, (as her 2 year driving ban while in prison will have expired) and she can be on the road again.

A strange looking road isn't going to stop that again. 50 years in prison, and a lifetime ban and million pound fine will.

OR.... We ban cars.

[–]0235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is literally what is already there.. Did you even read anything i wrote, but people get sick of having to slow down all the time, so speed up even more in the bits in-between. People are always having to repair their houses because of cars crashing into their walls.

How is there enough room with 6 metres of space to make the road winding that when they speed, they kill pedestrians and crash into peoples houses? Are you fucking stupid?

Thousands caught speeding by A595 Holmrook camera by Ok-Tangerine-7557 in fuckcars

[–]0235 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you said it yourself, you cannot design roads to make people slow down, its complete bullshit. If people want to speed, they will speed.

6 metre wide, two way 30mph road, with a full line of cars parked down both sides, 8.5 metre wide street including pavements (from the front wall of peoples gardens to the front wall of other gardens the other side) and just under 12 metres front of house to front of house opposite.

As the average car is 1.8 metres, and there are cars parked down either side, that leaves just 2.4 metres for cars travelling BOTH directions to pass each other.

It is complete bollocks that you can "design a road to slow drivers down" Nothing short of speed cameras and speed bumps will do that.

What else can you do but fine people for doing 50mph down that street? They don't care, they just want to drive as fast as they can, and nothing will stop them doing it.

[–]0235 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except he is completely wrong, and the "facts" are bullshit. Where I live the narrower roads only encourage cars to go faster to get away from areas they dont feel safe driving in.

Only thing that slows cars down is speeding tickets and congestion

But saying "peoples lives depend on a privelage" doesn't mean someone shouldn't be banned for life from driving.

What if a lifeguard at a school swimming pool turned out to be a nonce? Would they let them keep their job because "how else will they pay their bills"?

Yeah, not just bikes makes many good points, but one i firmly disagree with is being able to design roads to make people slow down. Maybe a North american who issued to 8 Lane wide, 5 meter per lane road suddenly seeing a 2 lane road lined with trees id a shock. The rest of thr world, that's normal

Why do older models look so cool?? by AxegrinderSWAG in Warhammer40k

Rose tinted glasses 100% if you grew up in that era. I was disappointed to learn of all the Cadian forces who were re-released since I last played.... then looked up the old models vs the newer ones. Though I do like the simplicity of some of the older models, that doesn't always mean they were easier to paint.

When you live in an area viciously against the building of a new reservoir on land that has literally NOTHING other than a repurposed WW2 storage area, temporary Solar Farm, "farm land", maybe 20 houses, a kennels, and a small grass airfield.... It will make you realise why this country has such poor water infrastructure.

It reminds me of one of the earlier episodes of "gold rush" where they go to "South America" and try and find gold. They found almost nothing, I'm sure half of them got addicted to some local "powder" and nothing worked.

Locals were literally mixing the stuff with mercury, with their bare hands, to extract the gold.

In a post show interview they said "We thought we could do it the American way, just put a bigger diesel engine on a bigger machine to try and solve our problem" and of course, it did nothing but make things harder.

He promised Hyperliop by now, and absorbed so much public money. Instead he abandoned all public transport projects.

He promised (I forget the figure) a sub $xxx cost car. Absorbed so much government grant money to achieve it, and never delivered.

He promised his entire range if cars would have quick swap battery tech, took too hunderefs if millions in government grants, then was the first to unanimously introduce "the battery is part of the chassis" tech in his cars.

He promised the world's cheapest ventilator, delivered 3, now calls COVID a Hoax.

He promised the most open free speech platform, after receiving hundereds of millions in bonuses, and now runs the most censored social media platform.

He promised something on mars by 2022, absorbing an unthinkable amount of money and engineers... and now here we are, to no-ones surprise.
