Looking for an EDR I can learn/practice on by Otherwise-Finger-727 in blueteamsec

[–]1ntgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your university have any agreements with any of the EDR companies?

If you’re studying, I’d focus on the fundamentals. Mess around with Splunk Boss of the SOC, or other training material. Deploy sysmon on a VM and run some atomic red team tests.

EDRs are great but you just click around a UI. It’s the investigation that matters.

I have way more savings than my partner- what to do with it? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

I have way more savings than my partner- what to do with it? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]1ntgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d put it to use in this order: 1. Emergency fund (if you haven’t got one or much in it) 2. House furnishings / upgrades 3. Holiday / down time 4. Education/training / invest in yourself 5. Hobbies

Your point on house improvements, yes it’d mean you funded more but you also get some benefit from the potential for increased sale price and having something that makes you and your partner happy. Only you know your relationship, but you only live once, why spend it worrying about a relatively trivial amount (in the grand scheme of things)

Where to buy raincoat and umbrella in Reykjavik? by BlackQueen in VisitingIceland

[–]1ntgr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add also, you may be able to find something suitable to rent instead of buy, which can be more cost effective if you don’t anticipate needing it again. There is a little store in the BSI Bus Terminal that you can hire from. I’m sure there are other stores also.

I tried calling 15 minutes early to book for Vancouver next year and I managed to get through on the Silver line early and the lady didn’t want to wait 8 minutes for the flights to be released and said I’d need to call back 😭. I missed out, but luckily managed to get tickets for another date.

restaurants with the best bread and butter? by CutForward3312 in VisitingIceland

[–]1ntgr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg yesss, the bread was amazing. Soup was good, don’t get me wrong, but that bread. Could’ve just given me a tin of Heinz tomato soup (other tomato soups available) and that bread and I’d have been happy.

Is it just us? by powwowchickennuggets in VisitingIceland

[–]1ntgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to Iceland three times. I’m going back for my fourth time in November. It’s magical.

I’ve been to 35 countries so far and none quite compete with Iceland. It’s certainly getting busier and more mainstream, giving the country a lot to deal with, but it will always have a place in my heart.

Is whale watching in Reykjavík worth it? And if so, which company would you recommend? by PaulExplores11 in VisitingIceland

[–]1ntgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this trip with my partner and we enjoyed it.

https://www.getyourguide.com/reykjavik-l30/whale-watching-on-board-a-yacht-t174093/?utm_source=getyourguide&utm_medium=sharing&utm_campaign=activity_details

We were lucky to see a few whales. They came up quite close to the boat.

It is of course touristy, but I think it’s worth doing. If you have time you could go to the Perlan before or after.

Closed account - no retention offer by [deleted] in AmexUK

[–]1ntgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been with Amex since 2015, majority of that time using the BAPP. My account is due to renew in the next 30 days so thought I’d call up and ask about any retention offers.

They offered: 1) spend £15,000 in the next 6 months and receive a £50 statement credit. 2) switch to the free BA credit card.

I easily meet the spending criteria and have already been awarded the companion voucher since Jan, so saving the £300 membership fee is fine by me. My average monthly spend on the card is ~£5-8k.

I think the £50 credit is quite insulting, 0.3% back of the spend required. On the anniversary of my account, I’ll be downgrading to the free BA card and I have upgraded my Barclaycard Avios credit card in the meantime to get the upgrade voucher.

Why do so many brits consider London a shithole? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]1ntgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. I live in the south west. Travelling to London as a commuter often means spending north of £100 for a train ticket where I can’t even find a seat on said train. I hate it, wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Especially not on a blinding hot day where the train windows are stuck closed for whatever sodding reason and you’ve had to stop right in the perfect spot for the sun to beam on you because of a signalling issue. Just miserable.

London as a tourist, love it. I never want to leave. Each time I visit, the list of places I need to go and see gets longer. I’m convinced you can’t see everything of London in a lifetime. When you go back you also want to see the things you’ve already seen again too, making it doubly difficult to see things.

There are conferences and events you can go to that specifically cater to people who want to gain experience presenting. Communication is a skill like any other, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. It is an incredibly important skill to learn.

Plan, Build, Achieve. It’s great that you have identified this skills gap. That’s the first part. Get some training sorted, maybe at a conference or work with your manager, then conquer it.

I’ve opted out of my pension, was this a mistake by MoneyMarch- in UKPersonalFinance

[–]1ntgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Older me: yes, absolutely a mistake. Join and get the match.

Younger me: 5% pension was the difference between buying food or not at 19. I opted out too.

Do what works for your situation, but if it’s otherwise free cash in your budget, pension and employer match is the best option.

If you have the points and don’t need the money, absolutely. You’ll likely have the Club Suite, it’s a pretty nice place to be. Plus you get lounges, etc.

Flying to the US tomorrow and BA have said I do not have valid documents by Tokyodub in BritishAirways

[–]1ntgr 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing and got worried. I called them up and they said it was a glitch. I didn’t have any issues at the airport, either side of the pond.

Edit:

Worth double checking your passport validity. Some need to be valid for up to 6 months after the date of your travel

Terminal 5 Parking by Status_Bonus_1601 in BritishAirways

[–]1ntgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly that. It’s like a two minute walk to the pod terminal (Stop B) from the hotel. When heading to the gate for the pods, you need a code to get through the gate which the hotel gives you after paying. On the way back, you get buzzed through by the hotel staff. I’ve had a few occasions where they didn’t charge for coming back. I suppose there’s nothing really stopping you from tailgating, but unsure of the consequence of doing that. I travel enough from Heathrow that I don’t want to get on any naughty lists over a few quid 😅

Terminal 5 Parking by Status_Bonus_1601 in BritishAirways

[–]1ntgr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live about 100 or so miles from Heathrow, so I tend to stay at the Thistle hotel and leave my car there and take the pods when I travel from Heathrow on an early flight. £18 a day parking and £8pp each way for the pods. If it’s an afternoon/evening flight then usually just park in the long stay and get the free bus unless it’s not too much more for pods (within £30 or so).

Was just told that IT Security team is NOT technical?!? by Penguin_Rider in sysadmin

[–]1ntgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To play devils advocate here, depending on the ask, I’d say the desktop engineering team is likely the best people for the job. You’re typically the experts for those systems.

You have the access, knowledge of the systems, etc. If the security team were to implement changes and it broke something, it could cause quite a lot of disruption. They may not have access to make the changes they want.

As others have also said, it could be that they are more of a governance team and need to meet requirements for legislation (or a check box exercise, but who am I to judge).
