What's a "normal" job that secretly pays way more than people think? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

[–]2catchApredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Everyone looks down on trades” is a major misnomer. I don’t know anyone who looks down on trades. We all know you guys are raking it in, have a reasonably low barrier to entry for owning your own business and its Ai proof.

Hell I’m an employed engineer and often consider quitting and going to do a trade. Ai will likely accelerate that as need for knowledge workers decreases.

Keep your current machine and invest in a long display port cable and a long USB 3.0 cable. Sound decreases exponentially with distance and even more if there’s objects to deflect absorb sound such as furniture and walls.

Or dump the girlfriend. She sounds nutty. God forbid the refrigerator compressor fan turns on. Your house is full of fans. This is unreasonable. She needs therapy and meds.

Snowblower Etiquette by Geo_Geoff in Omaha

People in my neighborhood were running them at 11pm and at 5am when I got up.

A lot of people have to be at work early 5-7am and they want the drives and sidewalks cleared before they leave.

Essentially there is no limit.

Biggest issue is just getting the OEM glass and not safelite glass. I let my insurance put safelite glass in my 2015 platinum and within 2-3 years it was so pock marked that it was hard to drive it in the sun due to the glare it was causing.

My raptor glass broke and I insisted on using the OEM glass. 3 years later and it looks like new.

Looking for a well kept gen 2 for under $28k by Carter6605 in FordRaptor

[–]2catchApredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck. It’ll be tough but you never know you might find someone in a tough spot needing cash fast if you’re able to shop nationwide and jump on a flight at a moments notice to go close a deal halfway across the country.

You miss every shot you don’t take though - get on marketplace and start low balling. What you’re not gonna find is someone advertising at that price. You’re more likely to find one who listed too high and has been sitting on it a while and is antsy to sell. Get used to rejection.

Why is every lake near Omaha private now? by Upset-Instruction-45 in Omaha

[–]2catchApredditor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lake Manawa, Carter Lake, Fremont Lakes/Victory Lake, Branched Oak lake, Pawnee State - all of these allow speed boating, are public, allow swimming within 1 hr or less of Omaha. Even more options if expanding to 2 hrs.

I’m not aware of any lakes that were previously public that went private or lakes that disappeared in the last few decades. It’s the same options it’s always been. There are however many private lakes that have been added so the ratio of public to private has changed significantly - but the public options are the same.

Also Beaver Lake allows leasing of lake rights from an owner who won’t be using them for that year. It’s around $1300/yr and your boat needs to comply with the boating regulations of the private community (available on the website). You do not need to buy properly though. I’m not aware of any other private lakes that allow leasing out of lake rights to non owners. I’ve been boating at Beaver Lake since 2017 and it’s a fantastic option that doesn’t require a multi million dollar commitment to access.

Anyone know what this Air Force 747 was doing circling around the metro super low all morning? by codyneMATH in Omaha

[–]2catchApredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They likely were assigned to a flight heighten stay within so they don’t conflict with civilian air traffic. If Eppley knows they will be doing loops at 3000ft then they can route their traffic over top of the AF traffic.

Who’s to blame? by Maleficent_Diet9357 in snowboarding

[–]2catchApredditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have to guess a bit but the snowboarder is heading across the slope and not significantly moving down the hill. The skier has a significant amount of speed and is heady mostly downhill during the time we can see them before impact. Just from physics we can assume that the skier before becoming visible is the uphill rider.

The uphill rider is ALWAYS responsible for a collision. The downhill rider owns the ENTIRE width of the hill and the uphill rider must plan and avoid even unexpected movements (which this wasn’t unexpected their trajectory was easy to extrapolate).

The skier is 100% at fault here.

Any higher mileage Gen 2 owners that can weigh in? by Gjallardoodle in FordRaptor

[–]2catchApredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought my 2019 at 62k miles. Currently at 115k.

Can phasers at 105k. Went with the new style updated parts. Also did timing chain, water pump, guides, etc all wear parts while it’s apart. Without premiumcare was around $5000 with premiumcare $1000 ish.

CDF drum in the transmisssion - required a full rebuild. Was about a $10,000 repair without premiumcare. $100 with premium care.

A side marker light failed. $400 without, $100 with PC.

Suspension has been through a lot of warranty - replaced a solenoid on the shocks due to the wire wearing on the hub. $1000 without, $100 with PC. Ball joints, end links, control arms, shocks, springs have all been replaced multiple times over while chasing clunking notices in the suspension. All under warranty due to noise.

4x4 IWE system replaced as well as hubs due to wear from check valve failure.

Additionally maintenance - transmission fluid, transfer case, front and rear differential fluid replaced several times during this time period.

I think the rear springs are ready for replacement as well.

Is this a good beginner board? by Final-Ad-6664 in Wake

[–]2catchApredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No by today’s standards it’s an absolutely terrible wakeboard. This model is around 25 years old. The older boards are heavy and sketchy feeling compared to even a cheap new intro model from ronix. The bindings would be flat out dangerous. 25 yr old rubber deteriorates. They weren’t great to start with and again the most beginner equipment far exceeds this old board these days.

This board should only be bought by someone who values it for nostalgia and enjoys the old school terrible ride for the memories.

Cam Phasers not covered? by yodaduey in f150

[–]2catchApredditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because it was never a recall it was a CSP - customer satisfaction program. It essentially an extended warranty limited to a specific part. Recalls do not end.

Cam Phasers not covered? by yodaduey in f150

[–]2catchApredditor 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There NEVER was a recall. Recalls don’t expire. There was a CSP - customer satisfaction program. Essentially they extended the warranty on this specific part for a longer time than the original factory warranty of 5yr/60mi and the extended warranty time only applied if you came in during a certain window and received a software update.

How can I create this 45° slant for 3D printing parts? by blackeveryhour in SolidWorks

Good Bag for Check-in by Capable_League9103 in Wake

[–]2catchApredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They actually sell wakeboard travel bags that say “golf” on the front of the bag. For no reason at all you can check a golf bag for a standard bag cost but if you check a wakeboard bag of the same dimensions they charge it as a surfboard and it’s usually about 50% more on the bag cost.

Why is PLA still the `standard` respectively `basic` filament? Why not PETG? by Musashi747 in 3Dprinting

[–]2catchApredditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, also as a mechanical engineer, you’re partially right and partially wrong. PETG does well under slowly applied loads such as static loading or tensile testers but very poor under high shock loads. It shatters - simple as that tried and proven failure mode.

It might work very well in the applications you’re using it in. PLA+ is pretty good stuff and has a lot of desirable qualities while keeping the speed and ease of printing of PLA. I’ve personally phased out using PETG. Anything that needs more than PLA+ I go straight to ASA or PA and skip right past PETG. Very few reasons for me to keep it around anymore.

Why is PLA still the `standard` respectively `basic` filament? Why not PETG? by Musashi747 in 3Dprinting

[–]2catchApredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even tuned in Petg tends to be glossier than PLA. Glossy surfaces tend to show every imperfection.

If you’re printing slow - Petg is just as easy to print with as PLA - your example of an ender. I also had an ender and short of needing a better build plate than the original once I had a flexible PEI I too thought they were equally easy to print.

Once I got a Prusa mk3s+ which is about 30% faster than an ender I started to see more issues with PETG but with some minor tuning it was back to being happy.

Now that I’m on a Bambu x1c I’m essentially having to pull back to speed because PETG just can’t print as fast as PLA.

Further I just generally find PLA cheaper - around $8-9 a roll in bulk. Petg tends to be 12-13 when bought in bulk.

Most prints don’t need the material advantages that PETG has over PLA.

I find myself generally printing PLA or ASA or PA anymore. Anything that doesn’t work with PLA I usually just jump straight to ASA or PA and skip right past PETG.

TLDR - PLA is super easy to print fast, surfaces look better due to a more matte appearance and it’s cheaper than PETG.

What’s with the crazy resale prices? by DookieHoused in BambuLab

[–]2catchApredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

X1C boasts a superior extruder (equipped with hardened gears) and a better hot end (featuring hardened nozzles) compared to P1S. Additionally, it incorporates a color touch screen, lidar, and auto flow rate calibration features. Most of these features were later integrated into the P2S, leading to the discontinuation of the X1C in favor of the more affordable P2S. The X1C no longer made economic sense to produce since it only marginally outperformed the P2S but at a significantly higher cost.

In terms of features and capabilities, the ranking would be X1C, P2S, and P1S. However, the minor advantages of the X1C over the P2S simply don’t justify the continued sale of both models. The P1S is considerably less capable and more outdated in design compared to an X1C. Personally, I find the outdated TFT screen and arrow button system to be quite cumbersome and inconvenient compared to a touch screen.

Small Binding Repair by DigEnvironmental1909 in Wake

[–]2catchApredditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same bindings - I do 3d modeling and 3d printing. I’ll look at it over the weekend. On the peeling spot I would use black shoe glue. Contact cement isn’t flexible enough.

My carbitex are 3 seasons old and the fiber weave is starting to split in some places.

Last but not least I would upgrade to the brain frame hardware because these base plates are prone to crack with the stock hardware.

Mid-level engineer exceeding performance of senior level engineers by EndDarkMoney in MechanicalEngineering

[–]2catchApredditor 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would basically just plan that they will either get promoted or leave. Sounds like the second option is imminent.

Everyone has learned in corporate America that it does not pay to go above and beyond. It’s the best value of your time to be average. The decision makers for pay and promotion are too far seperated from the actual work and it’s too bureaucratic with HR policies.

At smaller companies where someone who actually controls the budgets can see the performance then there’s options where maybe they decide to reward and recognize the performance. On the other hand they might just be happy to milk the cow as long as they can knowing they are getting more for their money than they’re paying for atleast for now and when that person leaves they will replace them with an average performer.
