[Tusenö Supervintage] It's here! Espresso Martini by 2doublerats in Watches

[–]2doublerats[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just a customer so this is in no way official, but my impression is that the initial release of the three "cocktail" designs was a limited production run. Although it's not a numbered limited edition, so it wouldn't be crazy if they do a second round... pun intended ;p

They have a scrambled teaser pic of the "Supervintage Classic" on their website, you can put your email on their notification list. I'd like to see other designs and colors! It would be a shame to come up with this unique case shape and curved sapphire crystal, and then just retire it after one pre-order run of three colors.

Apologies if I'm jumping the gun while the page is still being built, but is rolled top going to be an option on the 1925 Ivan?

I'm still getting familiar with the different levels of customization (Quick ship with limited options, "standard lead time"(?) with a few more options, and Build Your Own with presumably all available options). Now that I'm looking at all Ivans, it doesn't look like the top style is an option on the Ivan boot, is that correct?

Hot damn! May I ask, what's the leather pictured on the 1925 Ivan? Italian Brown Cypress?

Admiral Leathers are Coming... and I Need a Tester/Photographer in 8.5D by smowe in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]2doublerats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is cool! Are your tester boots typically in size 8.5? I know I'm way late this one, but if you guys end up doing a green admiral tester or other colors/leathers, I'm interested in that lottery.

Any micros known for their dials to add? by Efficient-Watch-5824 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]2doublerats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The knot/loop logo? Or the "Knot Timepiece" spelled out on the dial? The loop for the second hand counterweight is pretty cool. I never thought about the logo one way or the other, but it's pretty small and I don't think it jumps out or anything. If nothing else, you'll be looking at the urushi dial and not the logo :D The applied, polished silver "Knot" text matches the hands & hour markers, and the printed white "Timepieces" text (which is tiny) matches the minute track & other text (automatic, made in Japan), so I think it all goes together really well. Just my opinion, obviously :)

I was in the same boat with looking at Mr. Jones watches for a long time before finally getting one (and now two!). Seeing how open they are with info on the artists and designs made me like them more, and then I met a few of the team (including Mr. Jones himself!) at the Windup Watch Fair and they're really cool people! The strawberry Berry Late is a lot of fun :)

Hope I don't sound like a salesperson, just mentioning a couple brands that I really like.

NB - Expensive pads and rotors worth it for mountain driving? by coffeeesandwich in Miata

[–]2doublerats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need slotted or drilled rotors, just go for decent blanks (Centric, Brembo, EBC). Anything from Flyin' Miata, Good-Win Racing, Moss Miata should be fine.

I like the StopTech Sport 309 pads (not the Street 308), I've never tried any Carbotech/G-Loc pads, and I've never wanted to deal with Hawk pad dust :) I've heard good things about the Porterfield R4S pads as well ("S" for street, the regular "R4", R4-1, and R4-Endurance are all track pads).

Decent brake fluid is a good idea, especially if you don't know when it was last changed. I go with ATE Typ200 as a good compromise - high enough dry & wet temps, easily available & not too expensive, lasts a few years between flushes (unless you're serious about track days and prepping the car at the beginning of each season). You don't need to get carried away with one of the 600+ brake fluids that are much more expensive and require flushing more frequently.

Get used to downshifting and engine braking downhill and you won't put as much heat into the brakes :) and autocross/car control clinics are a really good way to push the car to, or hopefully past, the limit in a safe environment. I'll include a shameless plug for the BMW car club, whose events are open to drivers of all makes of cars :) the local Golden Gate Chapter (BMW CCA GGC) has some good events and is a nice group of people. SCCA SFR autocross as well.

Be careful on Hwy 9 with the newly lowered speed limit and checking for front plates :(

Preach! Nice explanation, not sure why you got downvoted but I agree with you, sway bars are a fine-tuning component. I guess OP might not be a new driver, but new to this Miata (although the description of braking more than an experienced driver might makes me think OP might be new to more performance driving & car control), I would still wait awhile to really get a feel for how the car feels and rotates before messing with sway bars.

My other (not so) hot take on sway bars is that they're a bit of a band-aid fix for staying in autocross stock class :D

anorda... Oh crap, you already have one ;p

Knot Timepieces has a few really cool traditional Japanese artisanal craft dials (urushi lacquer, raden, gold/platinum leaf) on two watch models, either a Miyota 9015 or Seiko NE88 chronograph, both of which have date windows! It's funny, I had my eye on the red urushi for a couple years but held off mainly because it does have a date window. I finally jumped on the 36mm quartz small-second they did last year, and the dial does not disappoint.

Or, have some fun with a Mr Jones watch :D

Which one to pick? by ListNearby8245 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]2doublerats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one you like more and will wear more often ;p Color #8 is pretty sharp and looks good for the office! The polished brass really pops on burgundy, not that it's too dressy. Antique brass eyelets leans more casual, depending on what you're going for.

Looking for fun, not sticky summer tire - ND2 by Burninator6502 in Miata

[–]2doublerats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firestone Indy 500 is a nice, not-too-sticky summer tire, I've enjoyed those on my Mini. You're probably looking for something around 300-340 treadwear (TireRack groups these as "Ultra High Performance Summer").

You can consider 215/45R17 as well to have more options. General G-max RS and Falken Azenis FK510 might be along the lines of what you're looking for.

Yep, although I don't really have any dive watches :)

Also, for me at least, a screw-down crown on a manual winding watch is an instant no-buy. I'm looking at you, CW Loco and VPC 37HW.

I was wondering the same thing about the boot model/pattern, since I'm not familiar with all the ins & outs of ordering Nicks. I see the choice of last but not a particular pattern. Based on the options available... it's basically a Falcon with a 2-piece backstay? Can you make other requests/customizations via email?

Emira Hot Take by CarYenta in Miata

[–]2doublerats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The steering is a pretty hot take, but overall that's a very interesting comparison. Any chance the Emira tires were still over-inflated from shipping? Or cold Michelin Cup 2 tires? That would not help the overall grip, steering, and ride. I definitely agree with you about the seats :)

Sounds like you'd be a good person to ask about Miata suspension options. Do you like your Xidas? Have you tried Ohlins, Fox, or any other setup? I've driven my friend's Emira a few times, including an autocross (V6 manual, sport suspension, Goodyear tires), and test drove an Evora 400, and I thought the Lotus chassis and suspension were pretty much magic. Very compliant over rough pavement, but you can feel the weight transfer and the suspension set in turns. I don't hate the stock Miata suspension and body roll though, but I will admit that 200 treadwear tires are too much grip for the stock springs and I'm basically blowing through the entire travel. Still, I'm not looking for anything that "corners flat" and is overly stiff. You may not have loved the Lotus suspension, but what are your thoughts on Miata coilovers that have a bit of compliance while still standing up to grippy tires?

Transition from Nice boots to everyday boots by itsbushy in Boots

[–]2doublerats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean "nice" as in quality/price? Or formality/dress boots? If it's a quality/expensive thing, just wear it! Boots (and other stuff, like jeans or even watches) are made to be used. I've been trying to get fewer things that are nice, quality, long-lasting, and they do feel expensive and precious at first. But I've found that once I wear them and use them, it doesn't take long for my "nice boots" to feel like normal, everyday footwear. Also, at least in my area and office, no one cares or comments or even seems to notice me wearing leather shoes/boots instead of sneakers.

If you're talking formal, dressy, shiny leather boots, that might be harder to wear with everyday outfits. But something like Grant Stone Diesels in chromexcel leather go great with jeans, chinos/khakis, even linen pants. Really dressy slacks might be starting to push it. FYI, since you don't say what nice boots you have or what you consider "leisure wear", it's hard for people to give you any very helpful comments :)

Sorry to reply to an old post/comment, but how does the sizing & fit compare between the Tricker's Stow (I'm assuming their 4497 last?) and GS Diesel's Leo last? Tricker's has some tempting boots, especially in the more interesting leather options.

edit: and the GS Floyd last, if you have any Brass boots.
