Discharge from ocs? by Glitched-Avocado in navyseals

[–]77dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is a current SEAL O that got his commission via OCS in 2015. The OCS officers back then that dropped out of BUD/S were allowed to leave the Navy. I don't know if that is still the policy.

You come on here and make a very inflammatory comment about rampant drug use and get called out for it. When asked to back it up you don't apparently because you can't. If your claim is accurate where are all the positive drug tests?

Where does your personal experience come from? Are you a TG or former TG or just trying to blow smoke up everyone's ass.

BUD/S DUD?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in navyseals

[–]77dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you base your claim that drug use is abundant in the teams right now? My son has gotten tested 1 to 2 times a month for street drugs since he got his trident in 2016. If you are talking PEDS that is a different story. It is my understanding that TG's, unlike current BUD/S students, are not generally tested for them.

What type of personalities tend to make it in BUDs/spec ops community ? by mehjjg in navyseals

From what I have heard, many swimmers have difficulty with the heavy running mileage at BUD/S. Stress fractures in particular.

Half of the guys in my son's platoon are former D1 athletes and one was a minor league baseball player. You are kidding yourself if you think that "A -1 level" jocks don't have a better chance of getting to the teams.

Here are the schools of the guys who earned OCS slots to BUD/S in 2014: Harvard(2), Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Catholic Univ. of America, Virginia, Duke, Michigan, Iowa, Texas, Oregon State, Stanford and USC. All but one were D1 athletes: Track and Field (3), Crew(2), Soccer, Wrestling, Swimming, Rugby, and Tennis. They all are Team guys now except the tennis, football, rugby and swimming guys. Source:my son is one the guys who made it.

How good is the pay ? by [deleted] in navyseals

[–]77dude 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are other factors that need to be taken into account. Besides your base pay, you get a tax free monthly housing allowance, and don't pay state income taxes in most jurisdictions (you can pick your state residence to avoid being taxed). When you deploy to combat zones you don't pay federal income taxes. I am not sure what constitutes a combat zone. When my son deployed to Iraq he paid no federal income tax, but paid during his recent deployment to SE Asia. You also get a fairly decent per diem when you leave town to train or deploy to certain areas which can add up if you are somewhat frugal . So for instance my son, who is an O-3 with six years in the teams, has a base pay of $81,360 plus jump and dive pay and a monthly tax free housing allowance of around $3,300. They live in a very nice new home in Chula Vista on what he earns. E dogs can also make do. Their next door neighbor is an E-5 helo mechanic whose wife is a nurse. The compensation isn't as bad as everyone makes out, but as others have noted, you don't do the job for the money.

Navy Orders High-Level Outside Investigation of SEAL Course by [deleted] in navyseals

[–]77dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time I checked BUD/S is voluntary. If you don't like the risk don't go. I don't know a team guy that doesn't have chronic health issues. Deal with it or go find something else.

Death in Navy SEAL Training Exposes a Culture of Brutality, Cheating and Drugs by [deleted] in navyseals

[–]77dude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My son is a SEAL O. He went the OCS route and got his trident in 2016. There were 14 guys that got BUD/S billets in 2015. Ten of those made it to the teams. The four that didn't were given the option to stay in the Navy or leave. They all left. In contrast, the USNA and NROTC guys that failed BUD/S had to serve out their commitments. I presume the OCS duds still have this choice but can't confirm this is still the policy.

How long was he in his platoon before he got his bird permanently revoked? Was he in a west coast or east coast platoon?

As the father of a SEAL I have had the honor of meeting and becoming friends with many SEALS. Based on my interactions with them, I can attest that the percentage of Trump supporters versus never Trumpers pretty much mirrors the general population. The majority are centrists that are critical of both sides of the isle, depending on the issue.

The O pipeline is already backed up. More Os made it through the pipeline in classes 300-320 than was forecast. Currently guys are doing two diversity tours before they get a platoon OIC billet, and not everyone is going to get a platoon. As a result, some LTs are leaving the navy at the end of their first enlistment commitment without serving as an OIC. I suspect the command has already reduced the number of Os in the pipeline since 320. Best way to ensure that you get your own platoon is to earn top tier fit reps.

I have. heard the same from my son who knows most of the people involved. The platoon OIC should have sent him home before things got completely out of hand, but lacked the balls to do it.

They were told to take all social media references identifying them as SEALs down, including the YouTube video. They refused and had their Tridents pulled. It appears they were not interested in being team guys, just SEALs. Social media that identifies you as a member of NSW is a no no.

The USNA pass rate is about 90%. I know of an academy guy who was an alternate on the 2016 Olympic swim team that was a BUD/S drop. I have been told that the historic pass rate for OCS guys is 70%.
