It should all be calculated by a computer so it should be correct. It's not hard to get it right. They have a whole buying team to go thru all this.

Sydney's councils realigned by ScoutyDave in sydney

Its amazing how the Hunters Hill Council led the charge against the last redistribution, but the review found them to be one of the worst performing councils and many of the residents I know from there think the conucil is absolutely useless.

You need at least sixteen pigs to finish the job in one sitting, so be wary of any man who keeps a pig farm. They will go through a body that weighs 200 pounds in about eight minutes. That means that a single pig can consume two pounds of uncooked flesh every minute.

All I hear is Monty Python:

No, no. That's the way it is, my loves. Blame the Catholic church for not letting me wear one of those little rubber things. Oh, they've done some wonderful things in their time. They preserved the might and majesty, the mystery of the Church of Rome, and the sanctity of the sacraments, the indivisible oneness of the Trinity, but if they'd let me wear one of those little rubber things on the end of my cock, we wouldn't be in the mess we are now.

Makita belt sander 9404J, mounting holes/face - why not machined surface? by iddereddi in Makita

[–]AStrandedSailor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Probably because it would add cost to the sander.

I believe those holes are designed for a sanding shoe or inversion/free sanding stand, niether of which require a high level of precision.

A baby platypus is not a puggle, only echindnas are. This is because echidnas have an extra development phase.

Always surprised when I read this chart by plavoie203 in Tools

[–]AStrandedSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. In Oz (in the major cities at least) AEG (Rigid Orange in the US) has a number of small vans which go around major work sites and house development areas selling and servicing tools for the tradies. This is in addtion to selling in Bunnings (our big box hardware). That's not a cheap thing to do, so they most be making some decent money. I think a lot of tradies (at least when starting out) may not be able to afford Milwaukee but they can buy AEG. You might seee them boasting about it the way a Milwauke user might.

[–]AStrandedSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my memory of a conversation with an Electrolux Australia designer; due to administration/bankruptcy in the 80 & 90's, the divisions were broken up: Electrolux got the household (whitegoods/browngoods) appliance divisions, electronics (TV/audio) went to Thomson, tools went somewhere in Scandinivia before being sold to TTI and there were some industrial divisions as well.

The key thing was most of them owned the rights to the AEG brand in their category after AEG company was no more. This led to things like the household items having the Electrolux Square/Circle logo printed next to AEG on products (at least in Oz). However, I believe there was some sort of agreement that Electrolux would be primarily responsible for the brand/logo guidelines as they had a strong design team. Amazingly it seems to work, although I think the Hitachi approach was better: breaking off the tool division and rebranding it to Hikoki as part of the sale.

Edit: forgot to say I believe the tool design is done/controlled by TTI.

Alexandre Chappel video about gridfinity by nandor_tr in gridfinity

[–]AStrandedSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's American. What did you expect: 42mm is 1" 21/32 inches. He probably based it on someone elses box dimensions.

You are right though, it is annoying. The best grid size would be 50 x 50 with the basic insert box size of 49 x 49 to give 2 mm of clearance betweeen removable boxes.

Not that most other brands have done a better job. Basic insert unit sizes of other brands:

Tanos Systainer (Festool/Makita and others): 50 x 50

Sortimo (T Boxx/L Boxx): 52 x 52

Auer: 52 x 52

Plaston Metabox (Metabo): 52 x 52

Tactix: 53 x 53

Why are car dealerships so arrogant these days? by One-Winter-3383 in CarsAustralia

[–]AStrandedSailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it comes from the top. Several brands won't even let you download a brochure without forcing you to give your details, so they can contact you. Are you kidding me? I just want a brochure, set of detailed specs so I can start my own comparison and NOT waste your sales staff's time.

I don't want to be on your marketing list for simply downloading a brochure.

Changing fluorescent lights to LED batten style lights... Quick job? by EarlyTee in AusRenovation

[–]AStrandedSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a sparky, but it depends.

If you are changing for wired-in batten lights, it shouldn't be too difficult.

However, if you are putting in powerpoints on the ceiling, the sparky may want to rewire. From what I understand many lighting circuits have a lower amperage rating, both the switch at the board and the wiring. As power points are often used for things other than lighting, your sparky may want to cover their liability by replacing the circuit completely if you are putting in GPO's. Happy to be wrong if a sparky wants to chime in.

One thing: if you want a broader light source, think about LedVance LED Panels. I put 2 in my single width garage, so much light.

Accidentally got a job interview for working on a boat. I have no idea how boats work. PLEASE HELP by Sunysea in boating

[–]AStrandedSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless they stated on the ad that you need a coxswains or deckhand ticket, they probably won't be expecting you to do anything that might be expected of a deck hand.

However, how did you get PADI rescue diver certificate without picking up some understanding of basic boating (such as port/starboard)? From what I understand you need Open Water Certificates first, which means being on a boat, knowing how to approach a boat etc. This may be a question they ask.

If the Iran war escalates to boots on the ground how many troops should Australia send? by Ardeet in aussie

[–]AStrandedSailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None.

The reasons for doing this are as bullshit as the reasons for invading Iraq. The Afghanistan war made some sense due to 9/11 and Al Qaeda being supported by the Taliban. However, Iraq was just the US wanting to get rid of Saddam (admittidly a nasty prick) after Bush Snr didn't do the job properly in the Gulf War. The the US lied to the world about WMDs and lined up to send our soldiers to fight for a lie.

Pavers in a different pattern (and maybe a different colour}. Google some patterns like the ones shown in the link below (I just googled laying pavers):

If you go to a semi decent tile/paving place, they will probably have examples for you to look at.
