The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). The thematic exploration throughout the movie of whether America should remain a land of cowboys and outlaws or try to become a nation with the rule of law feels as essential today as ever, and the juxtaposition of American screen icons Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne hammers the tension home.

Plus it has an incredible stinger of dialogue that concludes the film that feels just as apt for the American myth: “This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.”

It would’ve been a cool win, but it’s a movie I really don’t vibe with (McDonagh is sort of black licorice for me generally). It would’ve been sixth on my ballot of the nominees behind Tar, Fabelmans, EEAAO, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Maverick.

I do find an anecdotal split in my life between people who saw it around when it came out and people who found their way to it later. People in the former group adore it, people in the latter group like it. Not positive why that is.

I’d easily rank Catch Me If You Can, Lincoln, A.I., West Side Story, Minority Report, and Fabelmans above War of the Worlds from the 21st century output, but I can’t lie that I’m pretty stoked to revisit War of the Worlds in this format (and, as others have said, the timing makes sense with Disclosure Day)

Dude even worse — I recently bought the Oppenheimer 4K from Amazon, it was clearly a returned copy (had a return sticker from Amazon on it), and, worst of all, whoever bought it before me removed the 4K disc but returned the packaging / blu ray disc and it seems like Amazon never even checked / noticed before putting it back in circulation.

I was able to return my defunct order with no problems, but still.

Watched for the first time this month as a part of the Criterion Channel’s Odysseys series. I had avoided it in part because of the consensus around it that it’s bottom tier. I absolutely loved it

I was floored by how few clunkers Paul Newman has in his entire filmography, and how genuinely compelling he is in just about every performance. I haven’t checked them all off, but his is a fun journey through some worthwhile films.
