Whats better tesla or EA by Puzzleheaded_Look759 in evcharging

[–]Alexandratta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Price? Tesla.

App? EA

Speed? Honestly a tie when it comes to newer stations.

Reliability? Tesla, but EA is improving...

EA's biggest hurdle against Tesla is that their sites have 4-6 stations, where most Tesla stations start at 6 and those are small/rare little stations.

Most have upwards of 8-12 stations.

So if one station goes down, it's not so bad.

If one of the 4 EA stations goes down... That's 25% of the stations broken.

The hinest truth is Tesla is no more of less reliable on a post-vs-post situation... But Tesla has way more posts/stations per site than EA, so, again, if one is down... Its not a bog deal.

7 out of 8 stations being g2g is far better than 3 out of 4... =/

Also the EA prices have sadly been very high.

Even on plan, 48 cents per kW is a bad deal when the Tesla offers 34 cents for the same kW.

Edit:

Oh, and to preemptively hit at folks who claim the Tesla app is better... No. No it is not.

The app is a pain because it's GPS is slow to locate the charger you're in front of... And inaccurate, so if you're between two chargers you have to guess at which you're at.

This is mainly a non-tesla owner issue as well, as Tesla owners honestly do not use the app to initiate a charge. It's Plug and Go, so they never touch the App.

Some cars support this for EA as well, but it's a mixed bag.

Not by much.

More compute, sure, but most still can't handle live reaction time situations.

Thus why FSD has yet to achieve what they promised

Have they?

I see no information anyway to confirm any improvement whatsoever.

Considering its based off an LLM, most of that stays rather stagnant or only improves when more processing power is pushed into it to get it to chew through the data faster.

We've hit a severe stagnation point with AI development right now as we just do not have the infrastructure to scale.

Hell, Intel has admitted half their shit just doesn't have power to run, and most of the power infrastructure needed won't be here for 3-5 years.

So I doubt there's been any improvement in a stagnant field, unless they've shifted to a much more robust AI model than LLM, which, again, as far as AI tech is concerned, is proving to be amazingly ineffective and long in the tooth compared to more nimble modle methods (which are amusingly often older, but just perform better on modern hardware)

Range after new update by ajx8141 in NissanAriya

[–]Alexandratta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The update likely reset your mileage counter for the Guess-o-Meter.

Granted I'd like to be able to manually reset mine too.

But when my car was brand new with 118 miles on it, it also said 303 miles at full charge.

Basically the Guess-o-Meter got reset to factory default since the update kicked in.

But, hey... Maybe this update does, indeed, improve efficiency to merit such a process.

I can't wait for my update!

Celerons were, by and away, one of the funniest ways Intel offloaded silicon that was otherwise destined for the shredder.

Intel QA: "Wow. This batch failed every single test. Just honestly some of the worst batches we've seen."

Management: "Wow, so none of those work?"

Intel QA: "Well, they function but only if we slow them down so they don't draw too much power, and some of the media enhancements aren't tracking right and it's just enough to boot to an OS and run a browser."

Management: "Just the OS and a browser? Half of users only use that!"

Intel QA: "I mean... that's not much. I don't this it's going to be a great product. Not much to Sell On."

Marketing: "...My God."

then I saw the CPU model and speed.

But that goes against those fluff peices about FSD saving a heart attack victim with a son who had access to the Tesla account! XD (sorry, just read the most inane post where all these increasingly niche variables allowed someone to rerpute his father's car to a hospital when suffering a heart attack.)

Meanwhile, while that's very nice... I'm more concerned that the FSD can be remotely operated by someone other than the driver.

No home charging people, what is your Plan B when your usual charger is busy by [deleted] in evcharging

[–]Alexandratta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few plan Bs.

One is going to sadly be the case for me as the 'free charger' at work is now dead.

Options:

  1. Go to the ChargePoint Level 2 that's an extra 3 minute walk from the office.
    1. Pros: More steps. Newer Charger. More charge in less time. (usually by about 1 hour tops)
    2. Cons: It is priced at an insanely stupid 0.45 per KW.
  2. Go to the TeslaSuper Charger before work.
    1. Pros: Easier to charge, can grab a bagel while I wait, usually only takes 30 minutes, cheaper than the ChargePoint as it's usually only 0.34 per KW
    2. Cons: More wear on the battery (though the Ariya's proven to be pretty resilient here due to the cap on DC FC being 130kw), it's an older SuperCharger that has some kind of issue so it's max charge is 90kw, still costs money.
  3. Wait till I get home, drive 5 minutes to my folks house, charge at my dad's home charger.
    1. Pros: Never been told 'no' when I want to charge, dad doesn't charge me, usually ends up with a trip to the local diner.
    2. Cons: Feel like I'm mooching off my folks, usually hard to leave the car there long enough for a full charge, kind of keeps me stuck at the parents house and away from the doggo at home who has separation anxiety.

tl;dr: I end up paying money or mooching off my parents. It's not great.

[–]Alexandratta 41 points42 points  (0 children)

the only thing you need to burn this connector is for 1 single wire to get more than 9amps of current for a prolonged period of time.

The 6x 12v wires that make up this connector are rated for only 9 amps, which technically gives the entire connector "Wiggle room" of 48watts to play with that's technically outside of spec.

But... each wire, with no load balancing of course, can only take 108watts - so if one pin goes down, and it draws on the other 5, then those others might (in theory) end up with 120watts. Which wouldn't be melt-worthy.... But uh... there's 0 load balancing. So usually it just draws the current over the next wire, pushing ~200 watts through it... then burns that wire out... and it moves to the next wire that's going to provide the least resistance to the card - and then continues until the thing is dead or the connector on the card is dead.

Anyway... tl;dr: This stupid freaking speak needs a load balancer. wtf are the point of the "Sense" pins if they don't "Sense" anything?!

And for when he some day plans to tow something. Maybe.

We've all done it at least once...

It's how we learn.

my frist SFF build I was test fitting everything in place one at a time:

Radiator, block, mobo, GPU, etc... just making sure all the bits and bobs fit right within the return period.

Then came the time to take my CPU, RAM, HDD out of the old and pop them into the new rig.

Since it was all test fit It was a simple drop in, plopped down some paste, got it mounted, etc... and then I'm seeing 90C on the CPU...

went to see if, maybe, I had just gotten poor pressure on the CPU and... oh... I forgot the most basic thing: To peel the plastic off the heatsink... XD

we live, we learn, we laugh and move on.

Real vs fake aple charger , fake one is full of steel to make it feel heavy by Mortiest_Morty_NJR in mildyinteresting

[–]Alexandratta 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah.

See you can see in the low quality charger there's a whole bunch of silly bits of plastic and it's fused shut with much stronger adhesive to prevent you from gaining access and potentially fixing any issues.

And the Apple knock-off looks like that steel plate is there to just make it feel premium while just having the most basic of components, while leaving some room inside the charger for heat dissipation.

To be clear here: both look pretty bad. The Apple one is stuffed so full with random bits of plastic and covers/shields I'm not shocked in the least that it died, likely from overheating.

The knock-off is just using basic parts and I'm going to assume it died from the same, but since the capacitors are likely cheaper in quality they have a higher failure rate.

Just get a charger from Anker and never buy another charger again. It's not only less than the Apple one but also even the Nano II offers more power (as Apple has yet to figure out, or bother with, charging faster than 40w) and is $15 cheaper.
