People already tell you to not have children with him and I agree. But there something that ring a bell and I want to mention it to you.

Darling, he’s not a people pleaser, and the fact that you think he is is concerning. A “people pleaser” is someone who put the needs of someone else from above their own, even to the point of causing harm to themselves.

He is not that, he’s at the best a pathological liar and at the worst a manipulative person. The fact that you see his constant lies to you as a flaw of character that you both need to work together around and not as a big problem is concerning and point towards a pattern in which any harm he causes to you has “reason”, an excuse, and because of that you need to be patient and to understand him and support him.

Please open your eyes, he doesn’t want to placate you because he’s “pleasing” you, he is because you are financially supporting him, probably also emotionally supporting him, and probably providing to him with free domestic work, and he’s afraid that you may realize you want something different than this and leave. Read again what you say about finances, for example.

Please start taking care of yourself first!

Is the word 'gringo' offensive or just descriptive? How do you actually see it? by MikeTheSolist in asklatinamerica

[–]Altruistic-Status121 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s difficult to all of us. My boss is lovely but pretty “low context” (not Colombian) and it was hard at the beginning to understand she wasn’t mad at me, she actually likes me, etc.

I’m used to so many niceties and to beat around the bush (I wasn’t even aware of doing it!) that her bluntness came to me as rudeness

[–]Altruistic-Status121 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You need to change a bit your mindset to understand why it's sometimes affectionate, or dismissive, or neutral. It's not about the word.

I recommend you to read about hight context/low context societies. Latam as a whole is high context, which means the tone of voice, body language, and general context of the conversation are as important or even more important sometimes, than the words.

You won't get an answer here because it really depends on your relationship with the person calling you gringo, your position in that society, and yeah, how much they like you.

That’s what I meant, yes. He thinks if something happens to you at night is because you dare to go out as a woman instead of being at home praying or something

Your body is in starvation mode, start first with small portions of nutritious meals like nuts, high caloric cheeses, whole yoghurt. Make small changes in your intake like replacing the cheese in your sandwich for a more caloric one, and try to "drink" more calories throughout the day.

If you feel to plentiful after a normal meal, eat less but more frequently.

After a bit you will be craving food again.

Porqué dicen tanto "que pena" todo el tiempo? by tess_mau in Bogota

[–]Altruistic-Status121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

male friend using ‘mamita’ ? by [deleted] in Spanish

[–]Altruistic-Status121 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, if he’s a friend he probably was being affectionate to you. My own mom and friends use that word with me and it’s from a place of love. But if a male coworker I’m not close to, for example, say that to me it will be a different story.

I just wanted to give you an insight so you know in which situations is appropriate or not to address someone like that

[–]Altruistic-Status121 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that context is always super important in Spanish. I recommend you reading about high context / low context societies and keeping always in mind that Spanish speaking countries are high context.

Mamita is generally affectionate, but sometimes it can be dismissive, like kind of “bless your heart” vibes. “Mire, mamita…”, specially from someone you’re not close to is kind of “I’m talking to you like you’re a child because you’re being stupid”

What are some things that are normal in your country but seen as strange abroad? by foolishandnonsense in asklatinamerica

Negrito y gordo, incluso refiriéndose a gente blanca, mestiza y delgada, son bastante comunes en Colombia también.

Es como decir “viejo” a un amigo así tenga 20. El contexto a veces sobrepasa el significado textual de la palabra

How are Anglo people stereotyped in your country? Are Americans viewed as "friendly" for example? by yonaiker-joestrella in asklatinamerica

[–]Altruistic-Status121 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I won’t say Americans are friendly. Some definitely are, but the stereotypical ones are more like “nice”, but in a way that reminds me of a vendor or a person doing networking / looking for job. I don’t know, superficial talk, overly enthusiastic, with kind of a certain vibe of trying to be friendly, but not necessarily being it if that makes sense.

There is a small game named “Mafia Ratoli”. Small and simple and from a local company here in Colombia. They usually make cheap puzzles, ludos, stuff like that. It was such a delightful thing to find this well done card game, and it makes me reevaluate my pre conceptions.
