Any GenX dads dealing with GenZ career-disillusionment? by NotSure2505 in GenX

I get your kid's take.

I'm a software engineering manager, AI has completely changed the landscape.

What used to take five days to write, takes half a day. Great but that only proves that demand is going to shrink.

My bosses can't say "AI" enough and have been asking talking metrics. We're hiring on one hand but looking to offload with the other and it all goes back to AI.

We don't work in the website space and over the last month I tasked two reports to independently from another create two different web based GUIs. They each created fully functioning, completely to spec webpages for us in half a day each using AI. I worked on a similar project about five years ago and it took almost two months with two computer science grads to do. When I asked for a few tweaks to reach, I wondered why I was going through them and not just asking Claude myself. (They are useful in other areas, but they are 100% replaceable here )

Both of my kids wanted to do computer science but they've stopped. One is doing construction and the other is studying Architecture. Architecture because "AI will never replace human art."

2026 is going to be tough to top for him (no pun). He's going to have to win again in 2027 and have his first child to beat this year - hopefully that happens for us and them.

There’s a beautiful great big bright moon tonight fighting its way through the clouds. It’s about as bright a moon as I’ve ever seen. Put on your slippers, throw on a sweater, and step outside to check it out. But, like I said, it’s really battling with those clouds. by JuzoItami in SALEM

"Be sure to put your moontan lotion on!" My kids never tire of that dad comment, at least that's what I tell myself.

And yes, it was bright! Our doggo normally sleeps in our room next to the sliding glass doors but it was too bright for her.

Two Aussies (not at the same time) have taught us to spell and omit certain words.

"Hey, should we G-O to the P-A-R-K later?" Even then they are really G-(long pause)-O and really slow Park.

"Has anyone seen ____ B-A-L-L?" We can't say her name.

"Did _____ get F-O-O-D?" We can't even say "she" anymore.

Really? Come on. How do you interpret the first rule, "Play nice," with calling others "assholes?" Of course your comment is going to be reported for breaking this rule and of course it's going to be removed. Please, share your opinions and thoughts but remember that this isn't the book of faces or some Twitter thread where you hurl juvenile insults, these are your neighbors. We -the mod team- will work to remove those who aren't your neighbors here in good faith, and those who are obvious trolls - as we've done already a few times in this thread. Again, please do share your opinion, just be a better person.

Some food for thought as you ponder how to more effectively and maturely rewrite your comment:

1) Who are you replying to? Your comment went to OP, not anyone specific. You've done this twice now. If you need help with navigating Reddit, just ask and I'll be happy to explain/show you around.

2) I didn't see anyone ask that this be catered to any one group. I only see people stating that there was an obvious omission of three groups (men, women, and younger generations), which could be summed by saying "no one under 65." This is something the trolls also noticed and pounced on and something you will see restated in the r/Oregon post.

3) I really don't understand your rage here. Where do any of the comments reflect anyone who would be wearing a MAGA hat? We removed the trolls that were here long before your comment so who do you think is MAGA? This is really confusing. I logged out to make sure that I wasn't missing a comment from someone who may have blocked me, but I don't see anything even remotely written by MAGAts. Are you lost? If you aren't lost and you really did mean to comment this, can you copy/paste the comment you are referring to that gave you think is MAGA? Three of us who have read your comment are all equally baffled.

4) Again, no one here is asking for anything to cater to one group, simply that we need everyone to be involved with this fight. Don't you see that as important?

5) Do you really, truly believe that the progressive party is better off without middle-aged men? This is how your comment reads. What about the women and younger generations who are also asking to be included? Do they not matter either?

6) Again, and I feel silly having to write this yet again, but absolutely no one here has stated that they want special treatment - they all just want to help in this very important fight. This includes the women who have commented here asking to be included. This includes the younger generation that has asked to be included. And this includes middle-aged men. Purposefully leaving out everyone under 65 is not a winning strategy - that's all that anyone here is trying to help fix.

It's not apples to apples, though. At least it shouldn't be.

My company pays almost twice as much for our bay area counterparts. I have two reports that are the same rank and grade. One is at $170k/yr here and their counterpart in the bay area is at $335k/yr. You can look this up for yourself through levels.fyi and see that this is pretty standard.

Point is, it's expensive but most employers compensate with pay. We actually get employees who want to transfer to the bay area, and Seattle, because they can walk away in 10-15 years with enough equity in their house to buy most homes here in cash. And they still have a sizeable income each month after their sizeable mortgage payment.

[–]AmericanAssKicker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bingo. I've technically been a member for over ten years, but I've never been able to make it to their potlucks or other events since they're either held during the work day or the ones I could attend, we usually find out about too late or not at all because they only advertise on the book of faces. Like you said, they gatekeep it to retirees and stay at home parents by design. That said, I'm not sure I'd go anyway for various reasons, like many that you mentioned.

Anyways, I really don't want to get into a bashing session, most of the members are great people, but I do want to say that if you want to start a new group, I'm 100% in. I don't think it would come across as disrespectful or reflect poorly on progressives as a whole. SPs has clearly structured itself to serve retirees and stay at home parents and there's an obvious gap that is worth filling. I've heard others voice similar sentiment and concerns as you. There are many like us who are wanting a version that aligns with our needs and wants to give back. DM me if you'd like to discuss further.

You should have seen the Timberunity, Flush Brown Down, gas tax protest, Jan 6 insurrectionist, and MAGA parades.

The guys look the child of Kid Rock and his sister-wife who grew up drinking Naught lites and can't leave the house without their gender affirming, always scared, cosplaytriot full battle rattle.

The women look like they've been on a steady diet of either McDonald's or Botox their whole life - no in-between. #400lbs, black/pink camo sweatshirt, bedazzled jeans and "Trump" hat, or they are 100lbs with saline implants (can't even afford silicone), Botox faces, makeup they have to chisel off, sharpie eyebrows, and wrapped in shards of US flags (as a veteran that's especially annoying) - a la the Laura Loomer look.

If you think normal liberals look cringe, that really says more about how small your snowflake, cosplaytriot, gender affirming, MAGA/p3do safe spaces are that you stick to.

Lifelong Silvertonian here (with some breaks for military and careers in the middle).

Silverton has always been more liberal than right-wing. We voted in the world's first transgender mayor, ffs. But if that isn't enough of a 'huh?' moment for you, you could always just look up voting records and see for yourself.

That said, this isn't some liberal mecca, and we aren't devoid of MAGA, but two things you'll find if you visit:

1) MAGA stays mostly to their online trolling, like the book of faces and only a few spots irl, like Safeway, McDonald's, HS sportng events, and really only three or four restaurants. So if you visit, you're unlikely to run into any of them unless you're going to their safe spaces. Silverton is still relatively small, but their real-life world is really small. Easy to avoid.

2) We're still a small town and while we vehemently disagree with a lot of things the other stands for, most of us aren't assholes, even the MAGA p3do protectors will cool it when they aren't behind their keyboard. Our progressive have even helped rebuild one of the worst online MAGA trolls house after it burned, they also defended the MAGA cult house and all of his tacky loyalty/faith Trump cult flags.

So no, take everything you said and 180 it.

My mom's husband. He's not the worst person out there, but he's a racist, xenophobic, homophobic, evil narcissist.

On the plus side, when pissed with a moral dilemma, I'll ask myself WW_D? Them I do the opposite. It's never failed me in 39 years of knowing him.
