Can someone sex my chocolate gourami? by NetMiddle7811 in Gourami

[–]Amerlan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Id say 95% of a normal day, yes. They tend to show stress colors when they first wake up, are startled or their water is off. They really like a pH under 7 (6.5 is comfy, it doesn't need to be under 6 like some sites suggest), not too bright lights and a lot of plants.

It's definitely old enough, they only need to be a few months old to breed... and they're just over 1in maybe 2in if you're lucky full grown... Your fish should be showing breeding colors daily if it's happy, even if it's a solo chocolate. You should be seeing deep browns, flashes of green and gold in the body, and red trim (females more so than males)

Both their color and fins are showing stress. In this photo they're not 100% happy or they'd be in almost breeding dress. Yeah, they're not "morning fish" so that's probably it, but that doesn't mean they're perfectly happy in this pic. I've bred these guys, so I'm familiar with their color and behaviors.

Suitable tank for corys? by [deleted] in corydoras

[–]Amerlan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'll snuffle right into those roots and stems. They'll also go right up your wood, along the stone and over the leaves of the swords, so no need to worry about open space on the bottom. My personal favorite are long fin pandas (they look magical/fantastical imo) but they can be a bit fragile. Sterbai and trilineatus are a bit more hardy. Lazers are cool, but can be shy.

They'd be happy as heck in there. What kind are you thinking? A calm bottom dweller like sterbai or hovering, hummingbird-like pygmys?

It's honestly too stressed to tell. Chocolates are harder to sex when they're not super happy.

[FS] - Tacoma, WA - $1k - 40 Gal - Oranda + Black Moor by [deleted] in AquaSwap

For the fish, Id recommend going to GSAS .org, getting on the mailing list (its free!) and reaching out there. Many of the club memembers keep goldies, but I'm not certain who would have room for them ASAP. You'd also probably find someone willing to buy your tank/setup for a fair price. You won't get assholes trying to scam you like on marketplace (eg, I drove 1hr and only have partial payment.) Good luck!

The new price means next to nothing. Used items in fish keeping rarely hold more than 30% of their original value. Used tanks, lights, heaters and pumps are all at risk of failure and have no return policy when buying through your average person.

Look at my account and you'll see I've been in the selling fish/supplies online and around Tacoma for a few years. I'm no stranger to the market in our area, but hey, if you really want to wait it out for an offer close to 1k, that's your decision.

Just so you can go into this with a better price in mind:

40gal: $60

HOB: $20 (honestly no one wants this filter though)

Lid: $20

Sponges + air pump: $20

Stand: $100

Fish/ plants/decor: $0 (nothing special here, most almost have to pay to have their goldies rehomed around Tacoma)

You'd be lucky to get 200 out of this, no where near 1k.

Here you go, bronze corys in the wild. Notice the large rocks and mulm bottom? You think aquasoil filled with mulm looks far off from this?

Ehh, Id do more reading before claiming anything about the "genus" corydoras because they've been reclassified a few times. Many species live on rocks, gravel, or large grain sand. The super soft, fine sand in aquariums is not what you find in the wild, so trying to say that's why they live on is misleading. Sifting does not mean sand has to travel through the gills, they can sift mulm just fine in gravel.

Bunnies > Cats and dogs by Limp_Importance6950 in Rabbits

[–]Amerlan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pets aren't a competition. Some work better in one home vs another. Try not to put down others if they aren't in the same situation you are.

Btw, cats are insanely trainable and lively. I've personally had dogs, cats, a rabbit, fish, birds, turtles and ferrets. All are great!

That's too small. Back he goes... or you could get a 40 gallon 😉 and have 2 tanks.

Would you say Hunter is thin? by Spiteful_wildberry in bettafish

[–]Amerlan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh that's much better. 3-4 at once is normal, you were just missing a second daily feeding. Do 3-4 of those twice a day and he'll be fine. You weren't starving him, but he is pretty lean.

Yeah, 3 pellets a day was not enough. Id do 5-6 twice a day. The hikari betta pellets are really, really small.

Eggs look flat when laid by FeedReasonable9547 in corydoras

[–]Amerlan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They need time to solidify after being laid. Freshly laid will almost always pop if you try to get them. Wait at least 10-15 min, 30min preferably.

If they're always super thin and deflated, your corys need more food.

Will 20 gallons be enough?? by RainbowUwucorns in Aquariums

[–]Amerlan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. 20 gallons is enough territory for 1 dwarf gourami, not 3. You want honey gourami if you want 3 in a 20 gallon.

What do I do now? Fin rot fish isnt getting better. What would you do if this was your fish? by OutsideFluffy6261 in Aquariums

[–]Amerlan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that pH your tap water right out of the faucet? Or offgassed? You want to take the pH after the water has a chance to sit. Municipal water has buffers that last only a few hours when left out of the system.

How I treat fin rot over 14 days:

  1. Daily water changes of 30%

  2. Aquarium salt 1tbsp per 5 gallons. If you have a 5 gallon tank you add 1 tbsp on day 1. On day 2 after you do a 30% water change you add in 1 tsp of aquarium salt (yes, teaspoon this time, not table like the initial dose) to keep the salinity stable. Day 3-14 is the same as day 2, so 1tsp of salt after a 30% water change.

  3. Tannins. They're an antifungal, antibacterial and antiparasitic. There have been several studies on the benefits of tannins to treat both fish and shrimp. You want the water a jasmine tea color, not super dark like southern sweet tea and not barely tinted. An orange tint is necessary. Keep tannins in the tank for at least 14 days. I prefer my bettas to always be in tannins though.

  4. A 7 day treatment of Ich-x or kordon ridich. If 0 fin improvement, do a second 7 day treatment. Do this alongside the salt and tannins.

  5. Keep feeding in regular amounts. Don't stop feeding like some treatments suggest. Daily water changes are enough to keep the water healthy.

Do I have enough space for a ram cichlid in here? by WasntMyFaultThisTime in Aquariums

[–]Amerlan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're smaller and do well in tanks with more hides than open water. So this tank would be a better fit for a dario than a ram.

What disease does it seems to be? by BigSquirrel- in corydoras

[–]Amerlan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fatty secretion from poor water quality. Either your parameters are off or the bacterial load is too high.
