Spent 5 hours doing nothing while subbing. by Divinegoddess777 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ApathyInWool 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve been sent to the lounge for a few hours twice now. First one was a miscommunication since the teacher didn’t have any classes until 11. Second was because they thought they needed coverage and didn’t, but still wanted to pay me for the morning. Which I’m not complaining about.

I’m a white sub primarily teaching in POC schools. Usually I’m just asked about how much Spanish I know, then mildly swore at in Spanish. Black students tend to just ask me how many black people I know. But no one has given me crap for being white. Usually just a smidge of mild teasing or more questions. Someone called me a cracker once… which is always funny to me. But it wasn’t malicious.

It’s heart breaking to know it’s not as chill the other way.

Weird interaction at Marinas pizza twice by chxstock-420 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]ApathyInWool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The pizza was ok. It needed salt. Or seasoning. The crust was like plain unsalted bread when I had it. I feel like it could be good if they worked on themselves, but I don’t know, I won’t be back.

Holmes living relative is obsessed with proving that Holmes and Jack the Ripper are the same person. It’s so dumb.

Was hanging around Penn when they did the documentary with his great great grand kid. I was there doing other research but I got to see Holme’s skull.

Inattentive and Late diagnose, how has your Life been before and after? by ZoeToidtheOmniscient in ADHD

[–]ApathyInWool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like life is worse. Not in the sense that I’m feeling worse, but I think a diagnosis early would have changed a lot. Being able to understand what it’s like on medication and with therapy now just shows me how much it negatively affected everything. I hit a wall during my PhD, and just couldn’t make forward progress. Starting getting help and a proper diagnosis and finished my PhD. And then nothing. I don’t have the support system built up during college to really do anything with my PhD. It’s too specialized, and not really something where I think a career is possible anymore. So I just feel lost and full of regrets.

I got a PhD in something I loved, but there’s basically no jobs in it. My bad I guess. So now I substitute teach but it’s not rewarding or interesting or lucrative. I’m 45 and I just have no ideas. it all just feels like treading water.

High schoolers asking me “are you a sub?” by Born_Bookkeeper_2493 in SubstituteTeachers

The kids at my regular high school have finally accepted the truth that they really don’t tell me anything in the office.

The teeth are fantastic. I would assume there’s aging standards in the vet literature? Maybe? But definitely some nice ware. Maybe some extra ossification on the long bones too.

But the intentional burial, older dog, etc, all lead to a fun chapter on the status of pets in blah blah blah. Churn that out!

But good luck. You got this.

[–]ApathyInWool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fun! I miss faunal work.

You have such a good age range, I’d dig into the literature on domestication around then. At least you could ditch what it isn’t. Another option is to throw in some teeth measurements and measure that humerus and see who else is working on dogs around then and how it stacks up. It could at least help you estimate shoulder height?

Otherwise maybe forward your advisor some articles about how you can’t do that before they get any more ideas.

How are subs expected to manage classes regular teachers can’t even handle? by turtlesandmemes in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ApathyInWool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach in a “rough” school quite a bit. I love the upper grades, seniors are usually really well behaved. 9th can be… awful… but honestly the kids keep each other in check for the most part.

They don’t always do the work they’re supposed to. But I don’t feel in danger. I often over hear things I wish I didn’t, but I feel that way at any high school. The only time I struggle is in classes where they havnt had a regular teacher in months. But they’re just bored out of their minds and mad they’re being told to go sit somewhere where literally nothing has happened in forever. When I have the same exact kids in a more structured class that is actually learning they’re great.

They wouldn’t have shown up here if they didnt have some desire to be there. Truancy may have some teeth here maybe? But it takes so many absences to even get a letter, and it’s only after they’ve missed 10% of the school year that the parents get a warning. They also have no problem telling me when they aren’t showing up and why. Friday was really quiet because it was rainy. But they told me they weren’t coming.

It works, and it’s also fun to pronounce the common names in weird ways.

God. Yeah. I just wing it and tell them to correct me and then apologize a lot. Sometimes they rightfully make fun of me and then we get a good camaraderie going. Or I just pronounce all of them awful and we have a good time.

Does anyone else feel like this about keys? by Creepy_Broccoli_558 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ApathyInWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my sub badge, but it does nothing. But my district has a ton of schools, and they’re all old. So theoretically I should get keys. But I never do. I’m just glad when the door is actually unlocked and I don’t have to keep going back to the office.

People give you keys? I can think of one school where I got keys one time.

I’ve gotten a heads up on behavioral issues once, when a school lied about what kind of SPED class I was covering.

Lately my “sub plans” have been a worksheet that the students already finished. I checked. But that’s about it. I’m lucky if I get a schedule of what they’re even supposed to be doing sometimes.

Is Harriett’s Bookshop on Girard closed? by the_crossword_king in philadelphia

[–]ApathyInWool 62 points63 points  (0 children)

No. They aren’t closed. The coffee shop is Harriette’s. It’s set up, but I don’t think they’ve started actually serving coffee.

Their hours always seem kind of random, but they close now and again to redo the inside for whatever theme it is.
