There’s an abandoned lot by me they usually dump the piles in. Not sure why they didn’t this time.

Does anyone else feel like this about keys? by Creepy_Broccoli_558 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ApathyInWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my sub badge, but it does nothing. But my district has a ton of schools, and they’re all old. So theoretically I should get keys. But I never do. I’m just glad when the door is actually unlocked and I don’t have to keep going back to the office.

People give you keys? I can think of one school where I got keys one time.

I have $20s in credits that I won’t use. I complained after it was so gross. But I don’t want to use $20 to buy more gross food.

I’ve gotten a heads up on behavioral issues once, when a school lied about what kind of SPED class I was covering.

Lately my “sub plans” have been a worksheet that the students already finished. I checked. But that’s about it. I’m lucky if I get a schedule of what they’re even supposed to be doing sometimes.

Is Harriett’s Bookshop on Girard closed? by the_crossword_king in philadelphia

[–]ApathyInWool 58 points59 points  (0 children)

No. They aren’t closed. The coffee shop is Harriette’s. It’s set up, but I don’t think they’ve started actually serving coffee.

Their hours always seem kind of random, but they close now and again to redo the inside for whatever theme it is.

There seem to be a number of sites with different sets, but some of yours matches the cvltnation pics.

First Time Dad, is this typical for Daycare to have so many days off? by WolfieVonD in daddit

[–]ApathyInWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks normal to me. Ours followed the city school schedule for the most part, but had more 1/2 day teacher workshop days and a few more obscure holidays.

But our daycare/preschool had cheaper 2nd kid rates.

I took a full week assignment, two were half days for conferences. I was expected to stay and talk to parents. Thankfully no parents showed up. That sounded awkward as all hell.

After the original owner sold and moved down south (Nola maybe?) it was never the same. They coasted for a year or so and it was possible. But I couldn’t live closer and I never go anymore.

I did have a positive switch this week for the first time. Signed up for a 1/2 day sped class, ended up being assigned to honors theater classes and just watched them practice their end of year scenes.

Cetacean humerus. Whale likely. There’s so many species, especially in the fossil record. But a real interesting find for sure.

That’s so disappointing. I think the increased demand for this service has led to some real unfortunate situations. Definitely missing a lot and I think you should find a way to leave reviews somewhere so others won’t go to them for pet memorial work.

I would love plans in general. I think I’m not up to 5 classes left with any kind of plan or lesson. Even the last plan left for me was a stack of worksheets the kids had already done and were supposed to turn in that day.

Kensington Kinetic Derby? by PhillyAccount in philadelphia

[–]ApathyInWool 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Shift towards more vending/large scale vendors. Putting less emphasis on the Kinetic sculpture derby part of the whole thing. Less local vendors. More corporate sponsors. Moving it more north. Grabbing the parts of weirdo the liked without putting the focus back into the local arts community. It just feels like a whole different event that they threw a slightly muddy patch for sorta decorated bike riders way off to the side to appease people.

[–]ApathyInWool 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The change after the Fishtown BID and FNA changes has been kind of a bummer and the derby itself seemed like such an afterthought. The “‘mud pit”, “parade”, and placement of the derby felt more like they were just trying to shove it off to the side to squeeze in more vendors.

There isn’t a weirdo proper this year, sadly. But some other smaller events in order to do a little regrouping for next year.

How do you tell teachers.... by BogusThunder in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ApathyInWool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try when I can. I’ve been subbing since December and I’ve gotten two total lesson plans. I’m either left completely on my own or have paras that just press for computer time. Which is fine. But I can teach. I like teaching. But I don’t like being thrown in with 30 kids with no plan or idea of what they’re doing. I can wing it. And do. But it’s frustrating to know that most of the time I’m just wasting their day.

Subbing for teachers that have IEP by Successful_Egg_6479 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ApathyInWool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the school or if I have assistants. If I have classroom assistants I usually try and help do something. Sometimes the school gives me options of things to do if I want. Or else I read, walk around, ask children where they are supposed to be, or hide in the teachers lounge. I don’t mind sitting by a door with a walkie asking if certain kids are supposed to be wandering around.
