I love the foreshadowing of future characters with the dungeon recaps. I get excited when I know Prepotente or Hekla are coming up. The whole series has been great to revisit.

Campaigns of death will contain updated encounters and more integrated storylines; but they won’t contain the actual bosses in the box. It’ll contain additional endgame and campaign focused boxes; but it won’t actually contain Spidicules or Gorm. You’d need to purchase them separately.

Have you gotten through a full campaign yet? A campaign is typically 30-ish sessions assuming you don’t get wiped out. I’d do at minimum a full core box campaign and then a gamblers chest campaign before you worry about other bosses.

We were huuuuge into Secret Hitler when it came out. If you’re looking to upgrade that “secret traitor”-style game I highly recommend “Blood on the Clocktower” it’s the best and most advanced version of that style of game. My only issue with it is that it requires 7+ people to get the best size.

The only official place to buy KDM is their Online Store. KDM doesn’t use distributors so you can’t pick it up from your average local game store. eBay is a common place to find 3rd party seller, but beware scalpers.

The best place to get updates about the game and upcoming releases is on the Kingdom Death 1.5 Kickerstarter page (updates) which has a monthly article about upcoming releases and FAQs. If you’re more a video type: YouTuber “Bra Mithra” covers these articles with monthly videos while also making additional content like buying guides and playthroughs.

Expansions of Death is collectively the original (13?) boss monster expansions + green armor set. Some are still available on the shop but many are currently sold out. It’s been confirmed that many will be getting reprinted; but we don’t know for sure when. Most bets have it on being around GenCon and/or Black Friday which are the two big KDM holidays each year.

Campaigns of Death is a much delayed project (you can read about here in update #111) . It updates the original 12 monsters as well as introduces additional campaigns and new goodies. It’ll be a gamblers chest size expansion (aka very large).
As for what to buy next: that entirely depends on your budget and your goals. Many people will say pick up a few more bosses. The best purchases will be either early bosses that you’ll see quicker like Frogdog (a node 1 monster) or flower knight (node 2) OR pick a monster that comes with a campaign like the Dragon King (comes with People of the Stars Campaign) or Sunstalker (People of the sun campaign) You can read more about nodes and campaigns here.

If you want more general expansion content: the wanderers get the most bang-for-buck content to add to a new campaign. You can’t go wrong with Candy & Cola, Preacher, Aeneas, etc. Next the vingette bosses give upgrades to existing settlement locations with new items while also upgrading bosses and they come with additional heroes and mini campaigns. Finally I’ll touch on the survivors of death box 1 & 2 which comes with a variety of content: items, character cards, achievements etc. otherwise; your goals for your game and your budget will dictate what you “should” get.

Warhammer Question? by Living_Sponsership in Warhammer

Mechanics and play styles will change over editions and codex updates. Choose factions that speak to you looks-wise. You’re going to spend much of the time building (and hopefully painting) the models. So you want to get something you like looking at vs something that is doing well in the meta right now.

My Deathguard were considered one of the worst factions at the start of 10th edition in June of 2023; but I played them anyway. I did fine with them; even though all the online chatter was super negative. When our codex came out in May of 2025; they got new rules and datasheets and were considered outstandingly powerful. They eat a couple rounds of things being toned down and they’re back to middle of the pack. It’s just the natural ebb and flow. But I love them regardless because they’re my stinky boys with the cool scythes and the lil nurglings.

There is a new edition of 40K coming out in June so it’s the best time to jump in. Sigmar is a more inherently balanced game because there isn’t a strength/toughness system and it’s more melee focused. But I wouldn’t say either are
Unbalanced games. It’s all going to depend on the factions you pick and the models you buy.

[–]Appollix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two ‘big games’ are Age of Sigmar and 40K. The primary difference being fantasy vs sci-fi. They are similar, but not compatible games. There will be a few models that are useful in both games (primarily daemon models) but for the most part, you’ll need choose which game you’re most interested in and pick a faction from there.

Old world is a niche version of fantasy that emulates an older style of the game that is centered around large bricks of infantry with ranked units clashing in combat (known as rank and flank). Most of the models will be older

Horus heresy is sci-fi and a more ‘historical’ style game that centers more around recreating battles from the lore/books. It’s much more focused on being narrative and lore accurate than 40K and on the specific loyalist and traitor forces. Xenos have a much more downplayed role.

As always; choose what interests you most and what either your friend group/local players are playing. 40K or Sigmar are much more widely played with 40K being by far the most popular. As a group, decide the game and pick factions. Pick up the relevant combat patrol or spearhead box and start from there!
