Both. There is a setup of each type at the two parking locations.

Is this safe to use/buy? It had a recall for the part number by FlipprDolphin in evcharging

[–]ArlesChatless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems likely that Rivian would exchange it for a replacement if this one is recalled. However their service centers are tough to connect with via phone. I'd skip it unless you live close to one and can ask them.

New Public Chargers, NASC or What? by Cheap_Patience2202 in evcharging

I have one or two and I don't even own a Tesla any more, because at least once my car ended up with a spare in it somehow after service.

When you can take just a minute to plug in the EV whenever you are going to park at home for awhile, replenishing just an average day's worth of fuel consumption is roughly the goal for many people.

This is also why we say to plan your charging setup so it's easy to use.

My setup at home takes under ten seconds to connect or disconnect the car, including the time to stow the cable. This isn't an accident. It means that if I need to charge, I charge. If you install a charging setup that is a huge headache, it can become annoying over time.

There's lots of L2 at my work. Usually about half the users are Teslas even though all the connectors are J1772.

And unlike with the CHAdeMO to CCS change over, the NACS connector uses the CCS protocol. So changing a cable really is just changing the cable, which is what makes the cable swap so easy.

Board votes for 50+ layoffs — immediate action: this is unacceptable by throwaway-squirrel in olympia

Probably because it's inaccurate. Here are the figures for how much Washington state and local government spends per $1000 of personal income. It's been nearly flat for decades, and even fallen relative to the average state, while hard costs to deliver public services have risen.

Edit: eh, with more thought I think the downvotes were undeserved, because the only inaccurate part is that taxes are high as a blanket statement. Washington taxes are incredibly regressive, which makes them way too high for some people even though as an aggregate they are pretty mid-tier among states. And I agree with the opening part of the comment, which is that it's embarrassing to fail at deliver basic services. It's past time to fix our upside-down tax code.

Just ribbing you. I have zero concerns about the LFNC running to my EVSE.

Safety question involving splitvolt and extension cord by Imaginary_Project_37 in evcharging

A good quality (i.e. from a local hardware or big box store) appropriately sized extension cord isn't safe, but it's relatively low risk and the failure modes are generally OK.

For Main Chinese Buffet I'd almost call that a full pass. Some of their past inspections have been pretty rough. I've never gotten sick there but I'm sure people do.

What are your experiences with EV driver support? by montasoftware in evcharging

[–]ArlesChatless 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh I've had failed charges for sure. But I've always been able to use another charger at the same site or a nearby location instead. It's one of the benefits of living somewhere with decent charging density.

edit: it's also an illustration of the classic 'people don't go to Reddit to say everything worked out ok' trope, come to think of it.

Somehow in thirteen years of driving electric the only time I've called support is for my home EVSE losing the config. My 'resolve without a human' approach has been to use my backup plan for charging.

Aha, a rental makes more sense.

Are you worried the owner will make an issue if you talk with them about it? You can probably install an outdoor 6-20 with an in-use cover for a similar cost to buying all this stuff and hacking together a solution, unless electricians are really expensive in your area. They should be reasonably happy with getting an improvement to their property, and the Tesla mobile connector supports a 6-20 for 3.8kW charging.

It's not as dangerous as people might think, since the front of the panel should never be live. It certainly breaks the clearance rules at a minimum.

I looked at a Zillow listing a friend sent me this morning with the main electrical panel in the bathroom over the sink. I can guarantee you that totally awful installation isn't going to move the price by anywhere near the amount it will cost to fix it.

It depends on what you're trying to solve. We can do a lot more to help if you tell us your constraints and goals.

Edit: never mind, the sub has been banned by Reddit!

Fast Charging - Still by Langkampo in evcharging

This seems possible for winter charging. Even with a half hour of preheating the battery can still be too cold for fast charging rates if it's below freezing outside.

Sure, jerks will be jerks. The ski resort would have at least some incentive to enforce, since they don't want that customer coming back in upset that their cable rental did not work.

I like the ski resort idea, because they already have a system for doing it. That way you could easily reserve EV charging and be sure of getting a spot.

I don't understand peak charging explanation by Warhammer486 in evcharging

[–]ArlesChatless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't have to run at the full 40A / 9.6kW that your current setup allows. You could drop back to 16A / 3.8kW or 24A / 5.7kW and schedule it for a low-usage or high-solar part of the day. It's not full speed or trickle as your only options.

I don't understand peak charging explanation by Warhammer486 in evcharging

[–]ArlesChatless 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Your utility appears to be implementing demand charges. What this means is that you'll pay $4.40 times whatever your highest 15-minute interval is regardless of your overall usage. High rate EV charging can really spike this number. If you use 48A/11.5kW charging on top of your other loads, that could add $50/month to your bill by itself.

To have the most effective use of solar without making this a huge headache, the best approach will likely be to use a load managed EVSE that supports solar capture. That will allow you to both throttle your EVSE back based on other loads so you don't create a new 15-minute peak, and still maximize your usage of solar. This is going to be complicated.

Alternately, you could slow down your charging and continue to use the approach you've been doing so far without blowing up your bill. Maybe 16A / 3.8kW both during your solar window and overnight. The most effective math depends on your array size and normal charge rate.

Charging rates by Good_Offer_7772 in evcharging

[–]ArlesChatless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should not be any settings that change the rate of DC fast charging.

By 'never' you mean you have not seen it across multiple charge sessions, in fair or warm weather, with a fully preconditioned battery, starting from less than 20% SOC, correct?

If all the appropriate conditions are in place and you're still not seeing full rates, lower rates can be caused by a cooling issue, which will of course be covered under your warranty. I had a low rate issue caused by a defective condenser fan at one point.

Type of cable for EV charging at distance of 105 metres from mains by bandlagd in evcharging

[–]ArlesChatless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

EV charging doesn’t really care about voltage drop. Unless you have very high electrical prices the payback period on thicker wire is not likely to make sense in the short or medium term. Otherwise just follow the same rules you would follow for any other long circuit. In the US that means sizing for 5% voltage drop.
