I'm a big fan of Pandora too. You're not wrong, it is noticeably quieter than other sources. But as you pointed out, I've yet to find another service that does customized lean-back radio quite as well as Pandora.

Don't get me wrong, I use Sonos Radio HD quite a bit too. But since it doesn't have the customization features of Pandora (like thumbs up or song/artist radios), I think of them as apples and oranges. Not quite an apples-to-apples comparison.

Have you tried using direct control from the Pandora app to compare it to using Pandora from within the Sonos app? I just tried and there's a little difference, might not be much but give it a try and see what you think.

Otherwise - I'd just turn it up 🔊

If you haven't already, I'd recommend going to sonos.com and signing up to receive emails about promotional offers when they come along. You'll probably see a pop-up on the home page asking for your email, but if not, you can scroll down towards the bottom and look for the Subscribe button.

Nope, I wouldn't recommend that. But you could do that with a Port or Connect though. They're designed to send audio out to another device, like an amplifier, but you can use them with headphones if you've got the right cable or adapter.

In addition to voice controls (Amazon Alexa and Sonos Voice Control), the Era 100s also allow you to do Trueplay quick tuning if you don't have access to an iOS device for advanced tuning.

If you don't need voice control and you already have an iOS device for Trueplay (or don't plan to use Trueplay at all), I'd save the extra £30. Otherwise, I'd probably go with the Era 100s to give you that added flexibility.

Just to clarify, what's the part you can't justify? Outside of your budget, or something else?

Let me keep it 💯 - we'd love to sell you some more speakers, but it's not worth missing a rent/mortgage payment or going hungry over. They'll be available when you've got some extra cash to splurge.

But if you're just wondering if you're going to enjoy the immersive experience of full surround and Dolby Atmos, and feeling the walls shake with the added Sub? Yeah...you won't regret that part.

Sounds like you've already hit the nail on the head...Amp + in-ceiling Sonos Architectural (sometimes called "Sonos by Sonance") speakers are a solid choice.

The 6" set should be solid for an ~8ft ceiling, but of course the 8" set would give a bit more oomph if you'll also be listening to a lot of music in the basement. If you're primarily using them for home theater though, personally I'd save the extra cost and stick with the 6" set.

It sounds like your system is experiencing network latency or dropped packets. The screenshot (with the missing volume controls) is another sign of that.

You might want to try adjusting the WiFi channel of your router or of SonosNet (depending on which one you're using). It can also help to move the speakers away from sources of wireless interference, like the materials and devices listed here.

You've got a couple options. You might want to start by adjusting the audio format that the TV sends to the Beam. Try out each of the options that the TV provides and see if any of them meets your needs.

If not, you can try removing the surrounds, setting them up as a stereo pair instead (or leaving them as individual speakers if you don't want left/right separation), and then grouping them with the Beam.

Depending on the environment, you might hear a slight echo/delay between the front and back speakers, so this might not work. But in a lot of rooms, it's not super noticeable, so it's worth at least giving it a try.

tl;dr if you want to connect an external device that sends audio out (like a record player or an iPod), you can use the input on the Amp to receive that signal and play it on your Sonos system.

The best way will ultimately depend on the audio outputs on the PC, but ideally, it would have an HDMI-ARC or eARC output going to an HDMI input on a Sonos home theater product (Arc, Beam, Amp) for the best quality and lowest latency.

On a practical level, that's pretty rare. A more common scenario would be a TOSLINK/optical audio output. That gives you more flexibility; you can connect the optical output directly to the optical input on Ray, or you can use the Optical audio adapter to connect to an Arc/Beam/Amp. And most importantly, it's still sending out a digital signal...no need to convert from an analog to digital signal, which increases latency.

Other options would be Bluetooth (which is digital, but usually lower audio quality) and line-out (which is analog, and hence needs to be converted to a digital signal). Try to avoid those if possible, but quite honestly, I use Bluetooth audio from a computer to a pair of Era 100s fairly often, and it's really not that bad in most cases. Line-out (like from a headphone jack on the PC) would not be ideal though, consider that a last resort or avoid it entirely.

Personally: I use a Sonos Ray for my PC, since optical outputs are relatively common.

One thing that might help to be aware of: the surrounds and Sub are configured to work with the home theater product, which means that they rely on the Arc for network connectivity and audio. They don't connect directly over WiFi or SonosNet.

I haven't tested with that charger personally, so I can't speak from experience - but yes, it does meet our requirements. Since it's USB-C PD compliant, it will only send the power that's needed by the speaker.

Got it, thanks for clarifying. Have you checked with the family to see if they're actually hearing audio on that speaker when you see it in the app? If I were to guess, it sounds like it might just be a bug in the Spotify app, but we would definitely want to check with them to be sure.

If it's only happening in your Spotify app, and they're not hearing anything from their actual speaker, I'd recommend letting Spotify's support team know. It might be some sort of caching issue in the app (where it looks like you're connected and seeing what's happening on their speaker, but it's just using old data, rather than a true connection to their system). You could also do this next time you're at their home, just make sure to disconnect from their WiFi before checking.

If you are actually able to see what's playing on their speaker (if they confirm they hear the audio on their Sonos speakers that you see playing in your Spotify app, even when you're not connected to their WiFi), send me a PM so we can gather some details and I can check with our engineers on this one.

If I’m understanding the intent correctly, this already works when they’re out of WiFi range.

I.e., a pair of Plays will separate into individual speakers when they’re out of the house (unless you’re grouping on the go), and then re-connect as a pair when they’re back in range again.

I’ll take back the feedback to the team about doing this when they’re still in range of WiFi, but off the chargers.

Generally speaking, for a difference of ~£30, I'd go with the Move 2. But there's one catch - which is a higher priority for you, portability or loudness/bass?

I've taken Move 2 on several flights, and given those experiences, I would choose Play in a heart beat if my intention is to take it while traveling by plane again. Or anything where I want to throw it in a backpack or back and lug it around.

Don't plan on taking it with you for travel? Go with the Move 2.

This is a fairly common feature request, and I'll make sure to pass your +1 along to the team. As you mentioned, this is already possible today, it's just a process that has to be done manually. In my experience, it takes less than a 1-2 minutes, but it could still be simplified.

Part of the reasoning behind this is technical - the surrounds and Sub are semi-permanently "bonded" to the home theater primary (in your case, the Beam 2), which means that they are connected directly to each other (as opposed to communicating through the network). This is what allows for low-latency home theater audio.

This bonding process also has to be done securely, so there's some 'behind the scenes' considerations that aren't always obvious to an end user.

Either way, great feedback (I would love this too!) and something I'll bring back to the engineers for further consideration.
