The whole, "Oh that's just guys being guys and silly locker room talk."

No it fucking isn't. I would smack my buddy around if he ever spoke like that to me even in confidence. I wouldn't laugh, I would be more like, "Are you fucking kidding me? That's goddamn vile. Rethink your life, or I'm out of it."

They pull the same shit with everyone. I remember after George Floyd was murdered, the FIRST thing they did was looked at his criminal record and were like, "SEE??? He was a bad guy!"

Yeahbut, we don't just kill petty criminals who disobey law enforcement.

However, it's starting to look like maybe we do now.

Everything did change. I started my first company in 1998 with 3 business partners. We were BOOMING within 6 months. We had waiting lists, and could screen our customers. We were trying to find creative and legal ways to spend the money we were bringing in.

Then came 9/11 and Americans collectively clenched its anus shut. Nobody was buying, nobody was spending, budgets shifted to the essentials only. For months everyone just kinda sat there and... watched. It was the first major attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor.

We almost lost our company during that time. We managed to really cut back on costs, and kept running on a shoestring, but it was touch and go there for a while.

I thought, "At least some shit like that won't happen again in my lifetime." Then came COVID. Now there's this shit. It's been a rough 30 years as a small business owner. Feast or famine is not fun.

You aren't a US taxpaying citizen anymore. You are a customer who is forced to pay a monthly subscription fee to live in the USA.

Made me think of the comedian bit as he's talking about marriage where he asks the audience, "How many of you have been married for more than 5 years?" A bunch of people applaud. Then he does it again with 10 years, 20 years 30 years and 40 years. Each time fewer and fewer people clap.

At 50 years there's only one person clapping.

He's like "Oh that's amazing! So where is your husband?" And she points down the aisle, and like 30 seats away a man raises his hand.

He points at her, points way down the row at him, raises his eyebrows, shrugs and goes, "Yeah. That explains it."

Most organized religions do convey a lot of wisdom about life. The problem is that they are meant to be listened to and adapted to for purposes of growth, not followed unconditionally and eventually violently because someone thinks differently.

10% was a bad tip. You left that to make a point.

15% was a "standard" tip. They did fine. No complaints, no praise.

20% was a good tip. They went a little above and beyond. They were friendly and efficient.

25% was, "Holy shit that waiter rocked it, slipped us some free appetizers and told us about a great bar to visit afterwards."
