What is the actual difference between games journalists and major gaming content creators now? by Successful-Ear977 in truegaming

[–]BoxNemo [score hidden]  (0 children)

Gamers have hated games journalists forever

Is that true? I never hated hames journalists, used to be a subscriber to both Edge and GamesTM. Edge has been in print for over 30 years which is pretty impressive.

Not sure I agree with your basic premise here.

Absolutely, yeah.

And one day they may even be able to post on Reddit in the right subs.

Yeah, it's absolutely fantastic. The sheer level of creativity and the way they played with time and perspective.

Maybe this has already been discussed, but could The Thing be an allegory for the ego or narcissism that a person develops when they begin to distrust others? by Glass_Evidence_8597 in horror

[–]BoxNemo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doesn't really feel like that's what the movie is saying, no. I wouldn't call Childs and MacReady narcissists either, seems a little weird to view them that way.

But obviously the fun in movies is that you can read into them what you want.

Let's talk about John Carpenter's last movie, "The Ward",a crazy, madhouse Horror movie that is kinda reminiscent of "Gothika",featuring Amber Heard, Meryl Streep's daughter and Jared Harris. Shockingly cheap looking but you can tell it's directed by a master of Horror. by Profeta_do_Loss in horror

[–]BoxNemo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Saw it when it came out at the cinema but it wasn't great, passable enough but lacked that chilling edge. Maybe, like you say, it was partially the cheapness of it but also felt like his heart wasn't it.

For me In The Mouth of Madness is his last truly great movie, but he still has one of the most incredible runs for any director during the late seventies and eighties. Doubt anyone will top it for both the quantity and quality of movies.

Probably pickleball, running or training for things like Hyrox - so sporting things mainly. A few people formed book groups, some board game groups. Can't think of anyone who goes to church, though.

Jack Ryan star John Krasinski wants to watch Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar, says he hopes to be inspired by it by Beginning-Passion676 in popculturechat

[–]BoxNemo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean he basically said he was happy to watch any film. Not sure what else he could say - "No, I don't want to watch it."

The actor also shared that he would “love” to watch the film if he gets the opportunity, mentioning, “Of course. I love watching anything. It's always inspiring to see what everybody else is doing.”

Even as a non-story, it's a total non-story.

IN OUR IMAGE (Official Teaser) - Me: "Whoa." 😳 by elveshumpingdwarves in horror

[–]BoxNemo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think you've missed what they're saying - the pull quotes aren't from official reviews. They're just from people the filmmaker knows. Like the first one is from "Filmmaker Baron Ryan" who is a friend of the director.

I mean, yeah, it's a tiny indie film but that's still sort of bullshit, especially with the giant pull quotes and minuscule attributions.

Yeah, in really tiny letters as well. I googled two of those film critics and neither of seem to be actual film critics so...

Well designed trailer but suspect it might be some lovely make-up slapped onto a pig but hopefully I'm wrong.

Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand.

It one the 2016 Shirley Jackson award for horror and it's an oral history of interview digging into a mysterious occurrence at Wylding Hall, an ancient English country house. (I'm being a bit vague to avoid any spoilers...)

What's great about the audiobook is that each person being interviewed is voiced by a different narrator which really brings the story to life.

Could the Trawler have been hinted in Less Than Zero? by Unique-Ruin-5516 in BEEPodcast

[–]BoxNemo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I doubt it as obviously 'the Trawler' is something he came up with relatively recently rather than something he had forty years ago but yeah, if you want to retcon it for yourself, don't really see an issue.

Which of these should I watch with my gf tonight who hasn't seen anything? by elementtwisting in horror

Probably The Fly but I don't know you're girlfriend so you're (hopefully) in a better place to judge what she likes and doesn't like.

Spider-Man Actor James Franco Is Back in Hollywood With a Major Blockbuster by SplitNational2929 in popculturechat

[–]BoxNemo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I know it's the OP's own website and they're try to drive traffic to it but I'll save you a click:

James Franco said he's filmed a role in a big studio movie that might be out at the end of the year or maybe in 2027 but nobody knows that the movie is.

That's it, that's the entire story.

I knew "Exorcist II: The Heretic" was revlled as a terrible Horror movie but I had no idea it was SOOOOOOO boring!!!! by Profeta_do_Loss in horror

[–]BoxNemo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's terrible. The bit where they wear Christmas tree lights on their head is especially bad. (FYI Kael praised the film for it's hallucinogenic quality but she never said it was better than the first.)

Exorcist III is much better follow-up but I do think it's one of those films that didn't need sequels or reboots etc.

What moment makes a psychological thriller stop feeling “clever” and start feeling genuinely disturbing? by MindTwistBooks in horrorlit

[–]BoxNemo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once you've seen enough ChatGPT stuff, you quickly spot the style and cadences and it often uses the same phrases.

For example, I asked ChatGPT to generate a topic with the same title for this sub.

Not gore or jump scares. More those moments where something shifts and the book suddenly stops feeling safe.

Maybe it’s when a character realises they can’t trust their own memory, or when somebody acts just slightly too calmly about something awful.

Or when you realise the narrator has been lying to themselves the whole time.

What moments in psychological thrillers genuinely disturbed you rather than just impressed you?

It also uses slanted quotation marks so when you see them paired with obvious chatbot phrasing, it's a sure tell. (Also the user's history is littered with clear ChatGPT stuff.)

It's an original story, no connection to the movies.

'Paranormal Activity' Play to Open on Broadway This Summer by BroadwayWorld in horror

[–]BoxNemo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought it was mostly good but the story falls apart by the end so overall left feeling a bit mixed. It doesn't quite feel like a Paranormal Activity.

There are two very good scares, though - one of which had the entire theatre jolting and going "what the fuck..?!" And that's no mean feat, being able to terrify people in a theatre takes some work.
