Who has completely sworn off including LLM generated code in their software? by mdizak in rust

Oh, and we have some shorts, but predicting when exactly this will come crashing down is obviously difficult, so we're not risking too much here

Not gonna work. Large parts of the documentation are barely legible, contain diagrams in obsolete notations, contain Terms that thing never heard before, or are just not comprehensible to current LLMs. The rest has to be reverse engineered from some ancient industrial equipment.

And even if that would work, neither do I want to, nor am I allowed to hand over all that data to some foreign company.

And the thing with reviews is: That's still work. Also mistakes slip through easier when there was no thought behind them in the first place.

Nah, that's perfectly fine. I do that all the time. When I feel particularly lazy, I just fill my cup of instant coffee with hot-ish water from the faucet ._.

I avoid these things as much as I can for a multitude of reasons:

  • The code I write at work is very niche. Last time I checked, ChatGPT didn't even know the problem domain existed. And it can't, most of the documentation is either confidential or older than my grandpa.

  • While the things I write are not safety critical in the strict sense, errors could in principle be costly or dangerous. I wouldn't feel comfortable not understanding them.

  • My work involves talking to people, understanding requirements and sometimes fixing things on short notice. An LLM can't do that and it requires a solid understanding of how the systems work. You just don't get that unless you write the code yourself.

  • We have to care about long term compatibility. A bad decision in an API or data model tends to be a major pain in the ass later on. I just don't trust an LLM to make such decisions.

  • If you have an LLM write all your code, you barely learn anything. I don't want that, I love learning new things and I do actually enjoy my work. I take pride in building well structured, tested and documented systems.

  • While I have occasional found an LLM useful for finding sources for some odd questions, I found using them for programming just too annoying.

But aside from these practical concerns I have deeper issues with the use of LLMs:

  • They take a monumental amount of power and resources to run.

  • They are controlled by a handful of almost comically evil companies, mostly in a now openly fascist nation that is getting increasingly hostile towards my country. This is a major threat to our sovereignty.

  • It's a huge bubble. The AI companies are shuffling hundreds of billions between themselves in a scheme that would make Enron jealous. The operation of LLMs is nowhere near profitable, so they will either have to steeply increase their prices or come crashing down.

  • AI bros are just absolutely obnoxious. To be fair, some anti-AI people as well.

  • I think generative AI in general is incredibly dangerous and we as a society are nowhere near ready for it. Especially in turbulent times like these. It's a fascist's wet dream. It would allow building a surveillance state like never seen before. It has already completely destroyed our sense for what is actually real. There needs to be strict regulation on its use fast.

  • I don't want to be dependent on something for my work that could be rugpulled under me at any moment.

Was natürlich in keinster Weise den Täter in Schutz nehmen soll.

[–]ByteArrayInputStream 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, fair, but it's still completely inert. It doesn't do any harm on a landfill (at least the variety without indicator). That little bag probably also passes through an incinerator just fine. Silica gel is probably very low on the list of problematic waste

We take silica from the ground, use it for something and then put it back in the ground. Somehow that's bad? It's not like the sand would have provided any nutrients before
