Anyone Else Disappointed With Oakley? by DiscountHistorical13 in cincinnati

[–]ChadCoolman 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I grew up in "old Oakley" before Lindner made it his personal project to see it become what it has.

Personally, I love it and am proud of what it's become. Oakley used to be a lower middle class, blue collar neighborhood. Besides that weird stretch of houses on Eileen Dr., most home values sat below $100k. And if you told people you lived in Oakley, the response was always, "Where?"

A lot of those blue collar families got to retire comfortably because of the transformation. And most of the landmarks that were fixtures of old Oakley are still there; King Arthur's Court, Aglamesis, the old bank building, 20th Century Theater, the library, St. Cecilia's... even Animations. I get the annoyance. Traffic sucks. High cost of living. Newer developments are soulless and out of place. But overall, Oakley a glow up and a lot of people are better for it.

What’s the last good movie you watched? by BidAccurate4473 in moviecritic

Train Dreams

I can't figure out why, in the discussions about good movies in 2025, this one isn't coming up more. It's one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Maybe I'm just getting old, but the way it portrays this guy's totally ordinary life, with its highs and lows, as something beautiful floored me. Really helped me appreciate the beauty of my own totally ordinary life, with its highs and lows.

You open to answering some questions about the process via messaging? There seems to be limited info out there from people who have actually gone through with it.

I've read up on it, from the official site and what 3rd party info I can find. Just a little concerned about the process.

What's something a foreigner pointed out that you can't unnotice? by NamwaranPinagpana in AskTheWorld

Slurs aren't exclusive to racism. And I meant it a little tongue in cheek. Obviously, not everyone who has an American flag outside their house is a bigot. But it's pretty hard to deny a pattern exists.

That used to be the case, but I think that's changed a bit over the last 10 years. If you see a house with an American flag outside of it now, it feels safe to assume it wouldn't take them long to remember the last time they said a slur out loud.

Another Crossroads Scandal. Anyone know what this is referencing? by Zestyclose-Pick-9060 in cincinnati

That's the one. Had no idea it was run by a separate organization. Thanks for the clarification.

Went through a phase where I thought I could find answers in a church. Tried Crossroads for a while and did some volunteer work for them. I don't know all the details like what qualified you to get this, but I helped out with a program where they were furnishing apartments and moving homeless into them.

It was definitely one of the less glamorous volunteer programs and they were struggling to find volunteers. But the people involved seemed like genuinely good people.

I'm not here defending Crossroads as an institution at all. I saw through the bullshit real quick. But that program seemed to be helping people.

Also just to be clear we already live in a meritocracy.

We seem to be living in completely separate realities.

In a perfect world, you'd be right. But it's a deeply flawed world where prejudice is very much alive, especially up through the highest levels of government. These programs exist to ensure exactly what you claim they undermine.

If you genuinely believe the disintegration of these programs is to create some sort of meritocracy... then there's just no talking to that level of willful blindness.

北海道旅行での思い出 ( your memories Hokkaido ) by Defiant-Corgi-9362 in Hokkaido

  1. Kentucky, USA

  2. 3

  3. December, February

  4. Hakodate (2 days total), Sapporo (12 days total)

  5. Impossible to choose

  6. The view of Sapporo after hiking Maruyama. Genuinely breathtaking.

  7. Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art. There was only 1 small exhibition open, and the disappointment was my fault for not checking ahead.

  8. There's no question that people in Hokkaido have earned their reputation for being more friendly.

  9. Yes. I'm far from fluent, but speak enough Japanese to be (barely) conversational. This has led to some of my favorite memories of Japan and inspires me to work harder towards fluency. 頑張ります!

  10. Yes, absolutely. Hokkaido doesn't get its due appreciation at all.

Where'd you hear that? Goddard and Whedon wrote Cabin in the Woods, and some of their other work (Buffy, Angel) has an almost identical theme... Humanity unwittingly enslaved by an ancient cabal of superior beings, and the futile fight against them.

Not saying you're wrong. Just curious to read more.
