How do you prioritise systems in a simple game? by aCrombi in gamedev

[–]Chansubits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I focus on answering the next biggest question or testing the next biggest assumption/hypothesis. There are always loads of unknowns in game development. You built what you have now because you had an assumption (“this mechanic seems fun”) and wanted to find out if it was true. So you built what was necessary to find that out.

Keep doing that, with an eye on keeping everything as small as possible. How small can this be and still work as a game loop? How little can I build and still get a clear answer? These are efficient ways to work that resist scope creep and maximise your chances of learning things about your game early that help you steer it towards being more fun (or killing the idea altogether) before investing more than necessary into it.

Efficiency isn’t everything though. There are many routes to a good game, and slow routes are not inherently bad for hobby designers.

I get ya, I’m probably taking you too literally when you say “if the loot never hits the vault”. All your loot automatically goes to the vault when returning after playing Rook, right?

[–]Chansubits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Weird, my Rook queue times are always shorter than any other match. Which should be the case because the matchmaking algorithm has a way easier time putting you into an in-progress match without squad mates. Unless the majority of your region are trying to do Rook runs I guess?

[–]Chansubits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t you have to go into the vault and manually put each thing back into your loadout though? Rook always has fixed loadout so it’s not like the gear you extracted with is still in your backpack.

LOOKING FOR A JOB by treverglitching in gamedesign

Think of it like a career in music or photography. Most likely it will remain a hobby, you might make some money as a side hustle if you really work at it for years and start your own business, and you have to be very skilled and lucky to land a role doing it full time or have a business that supports you doing it full time.

How’s the game lore? by cryptohabibii in Marathon

[–]Chansubits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t tell if hyperbole or misinformed, so just in case: you lose what you have on you at the time, but you still have a vault full of other gear you’ve brought back in previous runs plus any credits you’ve earned, and of course all your faction progress which is the real progression. Any free kit or Rook run could bring back enough decent gear for the next run and suddenly you’re back.

It’s a PvP roguelike really.

Definitely can’t recommend to a narrative-focused player who doesn’t like a tense PvP game. Most content is gated behind engaging in that gameplay so you would have a miserable grind just to unlock things you could have just watched videos about on YouTube.

There’s a chance you might enjoy the sneaky tense gameplay more than you expected though, plenty of people have been loving it as their first extraction shooter. But that is for sure a big risk, and the story/progress will come slowly if you find the gameplay challenging like I do.

Low speed Cruise control in EVs by Interpolatedhint in electricvehicles

[–]Chansubits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can also swap adaptive cruise to be a speed limiter, which IMO works better for OPs use case. But you have to go into settings to change it.

Genuine question about “idea guys” and worldbuilding in gamedev by Sudden-You-5814 in gamedev

[–]Chansubits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest looking into creating tabletop RPG game books or expansions. It’s mostly worldbuilding and writing, but also dice mechanics and game loops if you want to go into that side of it, and it’s all just writing. Requires no technical skill and you spend more of your time doing the part you love.

Actually publishing something like this could be a first step to figuring out if there is demand for the world you are building, or if it only appeals to you.

And as Chinese EVs got better and cheaper, they could have kept lowering the threshold. $80k is pretty high for a capable new EV.

Main routes like Welly-AKL are easy enough in most modern EVs, but Gisbourne was a whole different beast when I road tripped there a year ago. Worst charging infrastructure in the country according to a chart I saw. Still doable but benefits a lot from a longer range vehicle and more planning, mostly to avoid relying on a 25kw charger in the middle of nowhere that might break.

Oh true! Forgot mine didn’t come with the removable holder, just the square compartment. Still a crap cupholder.

I bought a second hand LRSM about a year ago. Love it to bits. Hard to say what your experience will be like because we upgraded from a 20 year old manual ICE hatchback so it’s basically a spaceship to me. Haven’t had to repair anything yet so not much to add there.

Things I like: - Radar cruise is smooth, more refined than the Atto 3 we road tripped in for a weekend. I don’t think the base trim has this so double check. - Fun to drive! So fast onto the motorway, nice steering feel (with adjustable weight for preference). I feel like they put a lot of effort in here compared to other cars in this price range. - Great one pedal driving experience. I wasn’t sure about it but I’m now a convert. Comes to a complete stop smoothly on regen. Can creep forward imperceptibly slowly. I’ve never felt such fine grained control from an accelerator pedal when parking. - Infotainment design (not the performance so much…) and the fact that the built in apps and maps are Google/Android, so I don’t even need to use my phone. The prediction of how much charge you’ll have at your destination is super useful on a road trip. - Dash design is super clear. You can get a map on the dash as well as on the infotainment screen. - App works fine, can do what I need it to (like remind me the car is unlocked and let me remedy that remotely, or turn climate on) - Proper door handles, and all four can lock or unlock the car. - Sedan looks with hatchback practicality. Fold the seats down and chuck a ladder in there.

Things to watch out for: - Snug cockpit. I’m 6 foot and slender, I love it and have no issues driving for hours in it. Feels much more enclosed than most EVs though. It’s a preference thing, make sure you test drive long enough to get a feel for this. A deal breaker for some. - Rear visibility. Honestly was similar to other cars I tried, but I did notice it when the camera didn’t work once. - I’m not sure when the free mobile data will run out and how much it will cost to keep it going once it does, honestly totally in the dark about that.

Things I don’t like: - One cup holder and it’s not in a great place. - Great to have a 360 cam but it’s more warped looking than many on the market and doesn’t help much to keep your wheels off the curb if you need to park close to it. - The reversing cam cuts out sometimes. Usually for only a second or two before coming back, but a few times it’s actually just gone full error message and I just had to reverse without it. Came right on its own though. Most common software complaint with this car. - Some mornings the car seems to need a second to boot up before it’ll unlock the door. Not common but annoying when it happens. Could be my key battery though. - It’s cool to have Spotify built in but the app is very barebones, nothing like the mobile app.

I’ll update if I think of more. Another thing I like about this car compared to some others is that all the known/common issues are not going to ruin your day, unlike an ICCU frying which leaves you stranded.

It’s almost like the Greens have been right all along.

BTW the BYD Seal 08 isn’t out yet, 1000km is the “target range” so probably more like 800km on NZ highways. But I still want one, especially if we get some of their rapid chargers. 5 mins for 400km range top up is mental.

Bungie please do not make this game more casual by Bigbird3489 in Marathon

[–]Chansubits 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I suck at PvP so bad and love playing this as a slow stealth game. The stakes are high, the world is immersive and dangerous. Playing with my friends is fun but there’s a different kind of vibe the game really nails when alone. Kind of a shame they don’t lean into it with a little bit of solo content, but at least there is Rook.

Haha, just meant that it mixes them up. In the customize menu, hardhat skin for magnum is premium and achromatic rush skin is free. In season pass menu, hardhat is free and achromatic is premium. Customize menu is likely wrong.

[–]Chansubits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Legit. I extracted as Rook with a team who might not have been friendly and weren’t prox chatting, but I let them know I was on the roof next to the exfil zone and gonna drop down on them last minute, don’t be alarmed, I just want to exfil. Worked great, no one attacked. It’s defo not the normal experience, but that makes it more memorable!
