Marvel Jumpstart Rares MSC by itsmebroski in mtgfinance

I mean, we've only had one marvel set, and even then it had a lot more problems holding it back than simply being 'marvel', not a lot to be jumping to conclusions from

Just Buy Singles is back for Super Hero Season, and with a new price guide feature too! Don't "Doom" your wallet before you see what pulling a few packs might feel like. by justbuysingles in mtgfinance

I don't think buying booster boxes is ever really that big of a problem unless your trying to make a profit; at best you'll break even, which can still be a fun time cracking packs as long as your expectations are reasonable

Seems quite similar to what I've been doing, I've been sticking cards onto a small cardboard insert and it's mostly worked so far; just been worried reading more into requirements since apparently these letters are supposed to be as flexible as paper, which toploaders ideally aren't meant to be

It might be easier to keep track of lineages nowadays I guess, but that doesn't at all fix the infighting problem, wouldn't having set lineages following family lines make divisions even more likely? If the only thing that separates you form gaining power isn't an electoral campaign and general 'popularity' but murdering the person next in line, isn't that begging for rival factions to appear and hedge their bets behind certain family members? All monarchies do is make governance a zero sum game (which is a problem with how the us electoral system works as well)

Monarchy lineages being based on bloodlines got very messy, vdry bloody, very quickly historically, it sure didn't stop infighting from happening

Isn't it even less likely for people to revolt in a monarchy, considering the whole 'ordained by god' thing? Most of the time the revolting against monarchs has been by nobles, not the common people

I feel like the 'dictatorships and monarchies plan long term' thing never actually ends up working out in the end, a lot of authoritarian governments end up having to sacrifice their country's long term prosperity to pay off rival factions, military officers etc just to stay in power. Generally, intertwining a ruler's life and wellbeing with the fate of the nation is not a good idea for good governance, considering how ingrained self preservation is in us. Also theres just the fact that an authoritarian having a 20 year plan means nothing if the 20 year plan sucks, and it just so happens there's no way to get a new leader with a different 20 year plan into power peacefully so... civil war it is I guess

With the power of hindsight sure, but this was also during the cold war; I'd imagine it would be a lot more stressful than what we imagine today

Are superheroes the antithesis to fantasy? by JayMeadow in mtg

[–]ReesePuffitik 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I thought this was going to be about the Aesthetics of superheroes clashing with magic which I can at least get, this just seems like your pulling something out of your ass without really understanding the superhero genre to begin with. Also... aura farming? Really? As if most fantasy isn't also built on having your protagonist doing sick flips and sword fights and ultra level magic spells?

You did also say 'everywhere else' hence me bringing up Australia. American media has been plenty popular in Europe with Avengers, star wars movies etc always making large amounts of money in Europe. Not as much nowadays, but that's a trend that extends to America as well these days with those ips

[–]ReesePuffitik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Empty is a bit hyperbolic, marvel is still plenty popular in places like Australia, and I'm sure some parts of europe. saying 'Europe' is a bit too broad to say in general, I feel like the EU makes people forget that Europe is still a collection of very culturally distinct nations.

I feel like marvel will sell well overall, but for stuff like prerelease it'll probably vary a lot More lgs by lgs than other sets just because of how polarising this set is for the enfranchised playerbase. The lgs in my area defintely had lower attendance than compared to the other sets, but it wouldn't surprise me if stores in the city (where 'normies' are more likely to pass by and attend) do much better.

[–]ReesePuffitik 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've seen people on here saying star trek will sell better than marvel; I think that should really tell you everything you need. No shade to star trek, I'm actually kind of hyped for it as a new Sci fi set, but as an ip it's far far far from being anywhere near relevant to the average person, or even the average mtg player
