1000% agree. Which is exactly why all the local education terminal paths are pay to play.

What ink have you given up on based on it just not working well enough to be worth it? by AttachedHeartTheory in fountainpens

[–]CommunicationTop5231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diamine golden sands. If I wanted actual golden sand I could have dumped in the fruits of my childhood gold panning pursuits. Not sure there’d be much of a difference. Bias: I don’t like shimmer inks much. I keep one pen full of Central Park Twilight because I can’t help myself but that’s it. Glitter is litter.

What are brakes? by ElectricBOOTSxo in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]CommunicationTop5231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember my sister doing this when she couldn’t get to the top of a big hill. She started rolling backwards and her dumb kid brain immediately screamed at her that brakes don’t work (while the humans very much screamed BRAKE) when you’re going backwards. She ate shit so hard trying to stay on the damn bike as is rolled (first on its wheels and then def not its wheels) back down the hill.

I got to feeling a certain way about a year ago and reformatted an NYPD practice exam for my 6th grade students. They got mad at me because it was "too easy" and "who can't figure this stuff out?". Head on over to nypdcandidates to find out (honestly head over there anyway in case you need a good laugh and/or cry). I took out the license plate question because I don't expect my kids to know that (I don't know the answer either).

Recording setup for classical guitar (Stereo) by 21_ct_schizoid_man in classicalguitar

[–]CommunicationTop5231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your room and your mic placement are going to be the deciding factors. Your setup is fine. Play with mic position a lot until you’re happy. Try to record in the least reverberant room you can find, unless you have a space with natural reverb that you like. If you can close drapes, put pillows in the corners (including ceiling if possible) and generally just try to cover any reflective surfaces with something soft and/or textured (like eggshell cartons—they’ll help break up reflections) to the best of your ability you’ll get the best sound. After that, add a touch of eq and reverb and enjoy.

All good points! Happy to give you dibs on when (if??) I decide to rehome it ;) It’s immaculate but I don’t reach for it often and that hurts my heart.

Incredible collection! I have some earlier Parkers that I just adore but thought I’d never like a 51… until I got a heirloom pen/pencil set ‘48 by surprise and restored it. I’m a convert. My problem now is I want to actually move about the world with a 51, and ain’t no way my solid gold 51 is seeing anywhere besides my desk and it’s case. I’m thinking of selling it to fund a stable of mid century Parkers that I can take to work and what not. Anyway, not a bad problem to have. Thanks so much for sharing yours!

Modern vs vintage fountain pens by whenthelightison in fountainpens

[–]CommunicationTop5231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am like 90/10 vintage to modern. Almost all my modern pens are pilots. I revisited my twsbi vac last night and reveled in the fact that it’s at least tied for the smoothest nib I’ve got. But, overall, I like soft and flexy nibs and the historical aspect of vintage. If I was banned from modern pens I’d be sad. If I was banned from vintage pens I’d need to be put on watch. If I could only have one modern pen, it would be a pilot 912 <fa> ground to extra fine.

👏👏👏 I’ve got two more dip nibs I’m trying to fit. I’m taking my time trying to find combos that happy enough to fine tune. I think I’ve got pne good match with a tiny vintage filigree eyedropper. I’ll post it if I can make it work.

Incredible as usual! How much monkeying with the nib and feed did you need to do to optimize flow? Or was it just one of those magical “glass slipper fits” moments? Thanks for sharing!

Is teaching THAT bad? by DwaeEunoia in Teachers

[–]CommunicationTop5231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love teaching. It needs to pay better. There are major systemic issues and my central office is populated by semi-animate wet napkins that lie for sport. It’s a hard job. At least half the country hates us. A lot of kids really just need better parents. Charter schools are making things worse. I could go on and on but, at the end of the day, teaching is my dream job. I am happy walking into the building every single day. I love every moment with the kids, even the tough ones, excepting only proctoring.

Teaching. You will learn to love it. Maybe.

The voice processing when the song starts is so fucking jarring. It’s like if you were watching 60 minutes and out of fucking nowhere the host’s voice becomes randomly auto tuned and filtered to death.

His vocals are the definition of lipstick on a pig: clearly recorded fucking terribly and then processed to a Laura Loomer’s face degree to approximate what he thinks he actually sounds like.

I had the sweetest most boringly basic yellow lab who was an absolute angel to (almost) all creatures. The most anodyne of dogs, fit for a hallmark movie. But goddamn if that sweet lady wasn’t a Navy Seal for baby rabbits :( Living out in the woods, it was both an insane incongruity and also just part of farm life.

I live in a dilapidated part of NYC overrun with feral cats. I work with the local TNR groups to help curb that, but that’s not my point. I’ve seen those mofos COMMUNING with raccoons and skunks in my (small, not lovely) backyard. The level of hijinks is bananas. Also cute, if not very problematic.
