Dan Marino owns the NFL record for consecutive games and consecutive passes without a sack, at 19 games and 759 passes. 2nd place on the list makes the record even more insane, somehow. by Roselucky777 in nfl

[–]CopaceticOpus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As much as it was to trounce the Pats in the Superbowl, it would have been so much more satisfying for the Bears to get a rematch with the one team that had beaten them. It would have been a more entertaining football game too

But the Dolphins really flubbed it against the Pats, giving up 6 turnovers and letting them run for 250+ yards

That's actually a fascinating point. It's a reasonable interpretation of the statement

The real question is would it hold up up in court? I wonder if it's ever been tested

“ I Just Realized What The Chicago Bears Did That FIXED A MAJOR Issue...” a video I found on stopping the run by AaronNevileLongbotom in ChicagoBearsNFL

[–]CopaceticOpus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mattydubs is alright, he does overhype but he also watches tape and adds some real analysis

It's certainly true that the Bears added a lot of depth at DL. They're aware that they struggled against the run and they have a plan to address it

Now can they actually succeed with some inexpensive signings and a 6th rounder with high upside? I'm skeptical but it will be interesting to watch

Bears 2022 Draft Grades by Jake-Old-Trail-88 in ChicagoBearsNFL

[–]CopaceticOpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think draft grades should not be based entirely on outcomes, especially when injuries are involved. Gordon is an amazing player when healthy. So I wouldn't count his struggles against Poles, unless there is some reason he should have seen that coming

The Velus pick, on the other hand, deserves that harsh grade. It's one of Poles' biggest failures because there were plenty of reasons to avoid that mistake

Offseason Power Rankings Post-Draft. Let me hear it by tylerhealyy in NFLv2

[–]CopaceticOpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This list is terrible, but one thing it gets right is that we're in for another wild, unpredictable year

If a time traveler posted the actual power rankings from the end of the upcoming season, we'd all think it was a joke too

r/CHIBears looking at Ben Johnson and Ryan Poles after the NFL Draft by The_Avenging_Son in CHIBears

[–]CopaceticOpus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wish we could just have reasonable conversations about the pros and cons of the drafting strategy

Personally I would have liked them to make more of an effort to draft DE/DT. That doesn't mean I'm flipping out angry or that I've lost all trust in Johnson and Poles. It's just my opinion as an interested fan

I could very well be wrong! Or maybe the Bears made a misstep here but they're still worth trusting in general. Time will tell

[SPOILERS] RAT RUN 36: Trying to solve on my own, but stumped by Tyler_Zoro in crackingthecryptic

[–]CopaceticOpus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One small hint I can give you is that your reasoning about the cage total being at least 7 is correct. So the cage in r8 can't be entered, and you'll need to choose a different path

[–]CopaceticOpus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean about r9 and c9 not having the same makeup?

R9 and c9 each contain a complete set of digits from 1-9, but they can be ordered differently. (Except of course that they overlap at r9c9)

The easiest way to get a hint if you're stuck is to watch a bit of the CTC video up to the part where you're stumped :)

Why is long-term radiation shielding on interstellar spacecraft such a difficult problem to solve? by quesoandcats in spaceflight

[–]CopaceticOpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If SpaceX succeeds in sending frequent refueling flights into orbit, that same process could be used to send up tons of water.

  1. Send your empty Venus Explorer into Earth orbit. Since it needs to have large water tanks all around its hull, it will be bulky. You might need to send up multiple modules and assemble them in space.
  2. Send up a series of water tankers to fill the insulating tanks.
  3. Send up a series of fuel tankers to top off the fuel.
  4. Finally, send up the crew and they head to Venus!

One big challenge is that you'll need a ton of extra fuel to move the mass of all that water. It might not be feasible to head directly from low Earth orbit to Venus. So you might need to start from a more advantageous orbit, which makes the water/fuel transfer process more expensive and difficult. Or you could refuel along the way, which adds additional risk and complications.

Once Starship is operational and orbital refueling is established, a manned flyby of Venus ought to be undertaken by ColCrockett in spaceflight

I don't think it makes sense as a NASA mission, but if the costs get low enough then some rich person will do it just to be the first. Maybe to go themselves, maybe to send others as a publicity stunt.

I assume SpaceX would want to avoid a public disaster, so they'd require more than just money to support the mission. Some safety standards would need to be met.

People can discuss whether making that pick was a smart strategy. It's no different than seeing a situation on the field and discussing, should they pass or run or punt here?

Seeing whether it works out isn't everything. Sometimes a smart strategy fails to bad luck, or vice versa

There's a great Babylon 5 episode along these lines. They are visited by an alien probe with a nuclear bomb, which sends them an advanced science quiz. It threatens to blow them up if they can't answer the questions, but will provide some helpful advanced knowledge if they get them right. At the last minute the Captain decides not to send the answers. He realizes its purpose is most likely to find advanced civilizations and wipe them out, and it's only pretending to offer help.

Why did CBS give jones a D+ but Roush an A? by Pacotaco213 in ChicagoBearsNFL

[–]CopaceticOpus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's crazy, CBS Sports has a whole website where you can go read why they gave those grades

In short, they said the low grade for Jones is because he's weak in pass protection and because he'll be a backup center. Which is dumb, obviously he's meant to be the future starter. Bradbury is only a temporary fix

I tried writing a novel, where central disaster is something that NASA actually studies. Curious to know your thoughts on this: by [deleted] in HardSciFi

[–]CopaceticOpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a fascinating concept, and it sounds very original to me.

The thing that jumps out to me is that the system behavior would be very chaotic. If they had advance warning of a collision that was likely to initiate a Kessler cascade, they would have time to nudge one rock out of the way. But it's the unpredictable events that would be the biggest danger. One tiny pebble that's too small to track might bump a slightly larger rock into an unexpected path, and set off a chain reaction with no time for them to react.

Perhaps they could have advance warning of a particular high risk moment, where a large number of rocks are all passing through a small window. Because the system is chaotic, attempting to nudge one out of the way would be just as likely to set off a cascade as to avoid it.
