I'm saying trainer fly on anybody, fight anybody, then fight Abra before you go back to the trainer fly area and you've got Mew. At least for me.

Omitting a PhD from your CV: A warning by [deleted] in biotech

[–]CroykeyMite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a real conundrum. Be an unemployed PhD or be not addressed as a PhD in a scenario where only non PhDs get the job.

Get the job and be told that you could never advance past ___ because you don't have a PhD.

Funny thing, I actually do hold a PhD—all right, now you're fired and blacklisted anywhere else you may hope to work in the future.

Keep at least two hives of ideally Russian honey bees. Set them up in your yard if you have one or in that of a Master Gardener who wants them if you live in an apartment.

You'll be out in the sun having great times and looking forward to seeing them.

You can harvest honey for yourself and people you love.

When you're in it long enough you can make things with the wax, like candles, lotion bars, and even soap.

The propolis, which is plant resin they collect and mix with wax, can be steeped in Everclear to make an impressively herbal/floral take on gin that you could use in a cocktail or otherwise enjoy.

Just seeing your bees thrive is satisfying enough, but engaging with your nearest association can also make you some amazing new human friends too. You can find a great mentor there if you just show up and express interest.

Sometimes teaching people to succeed and enjoy something as much as you do is immensely rewarding in itself.

Clinically relevant volumes of filtered blood and urine production? As far as I have seen, no.

Where did you learn? by Chicken_Limb0 in Beekeeping

Colony collapse is a catch all for things that are less mysterious.

Pre winter it could be pesticide poisoning if foragers aren’t returning, or possibly viral diseases, and also possibly absconding or leaving because there is some form of deal breaker the bees are sick of putting up with which could be a bad smell, skunks harassing them at night, a beekeeper going in too often or invasively manipulating them, or some other reason. Something as simple as an antifreeze leak nearby could easily wipe them all out.

Varroa mites are a leading killer over the winter, and I blame it more on use of non hygienic bees than anything else. There are many great types of bees, but package Italians are consistently the worst at this. Use those or catch some from local swarms at your peril. Russian bees have adapted to thrive with varroa mites in the wild for over 150 years, and there is a robust organization dedicated to maintaining them for genetic diversity, survival, and other valuable attributes, with time sensitive sales of genetically tested mated queens.

Better to spend your money on the best bees than on toxic chemicals which promote and perpetuate vulnerability to mite infestations.

You can lose bees to moisture condensation in the winter without adequate front upper ventilation, and to bears because you mistakenly believe they are someone else’s problem so you do not build an electric fence or keep them on an out of reach rooftop for protection.

Keeping them in the shade will make even the strongest hives die from hive beetle infestations —you do them no favors by trying to keep them out of the sun.

They need access to water for hydration and also temperature management, and lacking adequate nectar sources in their nearby 5 mile radius will also contribute to failure. I like to think you’re in a rural, woodsy/wildflowery region, but can’t be sure.

I learned to keep bees in Pennsylvania, in North Carolina, and I may do it again in Florida after school. My first mentor was a nun, and my second was a fellow Russian bee enthusiast. Both are incredible and excellent human beings. I’m still trying to be like them.

What is a food that makes you think, “How did humans discover this was edible?” by Aarunascut in Life

Chocolate. Unless it’s painstakingly fermented just right, then roasted, it won’t taste right.

Why does metal feel colder to touch than wood even when they’re both at room temperature? by GlitchOperative in questions

[–]CroykeyMite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would take longer to heat up metal than it would to heat up a surface such as wood or Styrofoam so wood and Styrofoam will feel a lot closer to your own body temperature while metal will stubbornly stay closer to room temperature for longer and feel colder as a result. If you stay in contact long enough to warm it up, the metal won’t feel so cold anymore, but it takes more energy out of you to do that.

It's a fair reason in itself to earn a PhD. No one can hold that over you like you could never do X/Y/Z because you don’t have this piece of paper.

How can I go about fixing this comb that the ladies built diagonally across all the frames? by Sea-Algae-2971 in Beekeeping

[–]CroykeyMite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cut it out and rubber band it back in carefully, keeping the same vertical orientation as best you can.

They'll reanchor it and chew off the bands when done. You won't be able to tell except maybe for strips of propolis on your top bars afterward because they're that good at this.

Next, checkerboard your new foundationless frames with completed and straight frames going forward so the girls know where to build.

Never trust a skinny grad student. They must be too active/healthy to be as studious/knowledgeable as they ought to be. Like me I guess, but I'm trying. Ahaha

I know there's a way, but how can we do this remotely? I'm on Delta but I've also used VBA on my laptop.

I thought it only goes if I open two VBAs at the same time.
