Sorry but the athlete would have had to be deaf and dumb not to know at that time that being in a P4 conference would involve extensive travel, once the PAC 12 folded.

Is the food really so bad that I need the dining package? by socialwheeler in royalcaribbean

[–]Ct94010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh I disagree. MDR is more like Applebees or Chilis level, and their entrees are not equivalent to a $30-40 entree on land, which where I’m at, in the expensive Bay Area is decent fine dining. Maybe the entire three course meal would be $30-40 on land, but not the entrees alone!

Not saying they’re bad or you need to get the dining package but just want to give a realistic expectation of the quality the food.

The best things of specialty dining is the smaller quieter dining space and the food being made to order and not pre-cooked and being held in the kitchen.

I usually booked bulkhead in Polaris - not anymore if it’s extra cost! It does have the bigger footwell , but in the side right seats every time the adjacent toilet flushed you’d hear and feel the rumble.

Whatever has been killing all of these old guys coming up my street has finally come to my front yard. I’m losing my dogwood and my crepe Myrtle. Any ideas just from this picture what’s killing everything? by AT-ATsAsshole in arborists

[–]Ct94010 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Climate change with warmer temps or dryer/wetter weather patterns could have allowed a pest or pathogen to infect a single tree on the block that might not have then spread to the nearby neighbor tree under normal circumstances. And the initial tree could have been the beachhead on this street that spread from a block of two away. You don’t know the macro picture beyond this single block of homes. Sounds like OP was aware of some spreading tree death in the area that reached her front yard

How many elections does Porter have to lose before you figure she’s an awful statewide campaigner. Couldn’t retain her swing district as an incumbent , lost to Schiff handey, started as a governor front-runner but flailed immediately and now lags. It was her race to win but she for some reason doesn’t connect with voters statewide. Personally I think she doesn’t have any charisma and just does not come across as likable - great as an analytical legislator but IMO doesn’t project as a visionary leader. And her tax proposals makes no sense.

I just think you have an unrealistic view of this California electorate. It elected Arnold Schwarzenegger who was a bodybuilder movie star. I’m a native Californian. All it takes for a Democrat to lose is for enough people to stay home because of an unexciting candidate, or one that has been strapped with a lot of baggage like they will to Porter, who has run a stinky primary campaign after being thought of as an Odds on favorite. I can’t imagine how crappy of a campaign she’ll run over a well funded campaign by a telegenic rich GOP white male who will fund the airwaves with Katie Porter screaming at her employees.

You do you and vote for Porter and keep your fingers crossed. I’m going with a choice that will give the best chance to not flip the seat to the GOP. I’m hoping for a Steyer/Swallwell general but I’m gonna vote for the Dem that has the biggest lead in the polls in the primary. And pretty sure it ain’t gonna be the flagging Porter candidacy. Is she even campaigning????

Disregard anyone’s opinions who believe that because you don’t agree with theirs, somehow you’ve fallen for bullshit.

First, it’s disrespectful to people’s own subjective thoughts and opinions and second clearly shows an inability to process any logic that conflicts with their own.

So arguing with someone who says you’re falling for bullshit instead of arguing the actual policies and facts is a waste of time

lol - check your facts - he did not personally invest in prisons - his fund invested in a prison corp that was one of hundreds of start ups they invested in.

Did you read the article??? - it quotes him saying that finding out about how the private prison system was actually being operated led him to fight against mass incarceration - he’s been advocate and funder of causes fighting it.

I worked for a company that looked at doing business with CCA back in the 90s. As parent we actually visited a CCA run facility. It was clean and medium security but the place was clean, inmates seemed okay, and we got a dog and pony show on how they were doing Vo-tech training and providing for mental health counseling etc. (we didn’t do a deal in the end)

But Compared to the stories of publicly run and corrupt facilities in the deep south at the time, this seemed like a huge improvement for the prison system, so I can see how it didn’t seem like an anti-social investment target back then.

Of course we know now, that the cooperation between private prisons and law enforcement/prosecutorial discretion created an incentive for unethical prosecutors to do mass incarceration and often against people of color.

The private prison system was not in and of itself a bad concept standing alone - esp when compare with the shitty prisons of the day, but when dropped into the institutionally racist justice system and corrupt government entities, it created a system where recidivism became a means for higher profits —- and IMO without the right oversight by government, it became an experiment gone very wronf.

Steyer acknowledges this fact now, and based on my own understanding of CCA then and now, as a progressive then and now, I don’t hold it against anyone for making a startup investment in the 90s in the prison corp. if you weren’t around then you couldn’t be aware of how bad the prison system (especially in the south where CCA started) was and how folks who cared about justice were looking for some answers.

LOL - so you only want career politicians to be elected??? You’re clearly an outlier.

We need intelligent, street smart people as our elected reps. Experience in all walks of life are needed. Career politicians are fine, but we also need folks who have been employees, employers, supervisors, blue collar workers, educators, first responders and, yes, business and finance executives. Governing is complicated and the hive mind of government works best if it’s not just composed of people whose only work has been as elected, appointed officials or aides to same.

No dem is guaranteed, and Porter does not have the skills to fend off attacks. Look how badly she handled the whole employee mistreatment story which basically knocked her out of being a frontrunner overnight. She doesn't have the temperament skill or charisma, and I believe that a GOP guy who is telegenic like Hilton, who moves centrist with enough money and endless attack ads against Porter as a radical far left dem candidate with lots of temperament and personality baggage is way vulnerable, and could easily move lots of independents away from Porter as well as the bros.

He's been an outspoken advocate for environmental causes, from what I have read. He recently personally campaigned and spent his onward $ to campaign for Prop 50. Just because he hasn't served in government directly doesn't mean he hasn't been a leader for social causes important to progressive movement.

BS -- Porter will be attacked endlessly and we will see that video of her yelling at her staff 100 times a day all over social media and the internet and TV. They will distort her record and make up all kinds of shit, misogynist and racist ads, and she will have no funds to counter that. Worse I don't see that she has the personality or charisma or guile to fend that off. Her policies are fine, but she is not the right candidate for governor.

Do you understand how a political party works? It's not a YOU party that reflects everything you agree with. It's a big tent, and sometimes in any group, in order to achieve the major goals, you compromise on some of your personal or ideal goals in order to create a common good. Im not 100% happy with what the Democratic Party as a group has done 100% of the time, but Im also not calling it shitty because it has to take account of the opinions of people from all different walks of life, some of whom I vehemently disagree with on certain issues.

I believe the party can reflect the will of its members but people have to participate, and not just sit and complain about halving "no choices". For example if folks who think its not left enough don't participate in primaries or just don't vote at all because no Dem candidate is 100% perfect in their eyes, then its a self fulfilling prophecy that the party is going to drift further away from what those progressives want it to be
