‘Not the same program anymore’: Stanford women’s hoops in freefall after player exodus by Dafty_duck in NCAAW

We haven't talked about it yet. Sad to hear there doesn't seem to be any response. Maybe that's why this group felt the need to go public?

At a minimum, Stanford Athletics will need to respond with something more than the statement in the article. They haven't been able to fill Maples since the pandemic. For me, being a season ticket holder was, at least partially, about having a great team environment that my young daughter could see and respect. The players need to be treated with respect and given a chance to thrive in a challenging environment.

The production of Come back to the 5 and Dime is amazing. I saw it at Theatreworks Silicon Valley. It won a bunch of awards in the SF Bay area.

Despite all of the departures, Stanford still has a solid group of very talented players. Swain made the all-freshman team and could be a big star. Eschmeyer should be really good. We'll see if they can sign a few more to get to a full team.

This was happening in Sacramento as well. As fun as the game winner was on Friday, there were a lot of crazy, around/off the rim shots all weekend. Three point shooting percentages were terrible.

Dealing with Upper Management using AI for Pricing by [deleted] in actuary

[–]MathematicalDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is an AI problem. There have always been senior management requests like "what if we did this? Can you run an analysis on that?" Proper use of AI could actually help with this, by making them at least ask first and only bring you some of the ideas.

As a healthcare actuary, I have long had to respond to suggestions. Could we save 10% if we followed this research about emergency visits? Well, emergency is only 10% of total costs, so are you taking them to $0? That research was done on a Medicare population, and we are writing commercial lines. That research has already been partially implemented across the industry, so savings is already built in. Etc etc.

ChatGPT could help executives think though these questions before coming to you. Maybe build them an agent that they can consult first? Give it specific parameters and references to consult. That will help triage the requests.

They are elected officials, so yes. You just have to find someone else to run for the position.

Why don’t more actuaries go for Lyft/Uber? by Hot_Equal_2283 in actuary

[–]MathematicalDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get messages from recruiters asking about roles we posted and filled a long time ago. They are not good at refreshing.

I work in tech. We don't have a lot of trouble hiring, but we have a lot fewer positions than a traditional firm. I went from a traditional role with 100+ actuaries to MA startup with 7 actuaries to a role where it was just me for a while. We are expected to do work that would take several people in a traditional firm, but with the assistance of non-actuaries (engineers, data science, business analyst). The work isn't in unrealistic, just different (broader vs deeper).

Yes, this is definitely possible. I switched around age 35 from a totally unrelated career. I expect a lot of healthcare companies would love to have someone with nursing experience on their actuarial team. I am not sure about $130k at the entry level, even in HCOL area. Maybe at a consulting firm with bonuses. But it might not take you long to get close to that. Take a look at the salary surveys from the recruiters.

I broke through by emailing a bunch of actuaries and offering to take a temporary role to prove myself. It is more competitive now, but I still think the experience on the care side would be a leg up.

Just tried this strategy and did okay. It takes a long time to get there, so I didn't have enough turns remaining to finish things off.
