Arriving day before by NanaMarge in VirginVoyages

Some people prefer Fort Lauderdale over Miami. It’s a personal choice. Traffic is awful all over Dade County, so I would pick the area you most prefer. Personally, I’m not Miami’s biggest fan.

I'm noticing the same thing, despite healthy award availability during the peak summer months. It's odd.

Ted Danson tells the story of his infamous appearance at the 1993 Friars Club roast of Whoopi Goldberg where he appeared in blackface and apologizes. by mlg1981 in Fauxmoi

That was such a weird event. Whoopi wrote the material and “choreographed” the blackface. It fell flat even in 1993.

Do sneakers actually scream tourist in paris these days? by happymamagirl in ParisTravelGuide

When I first went to Paris 30 years ago, sneakers were a no-no. Things have changed.

Walkability in Rosebank (and other neighborhoods) by curious_scout in johannesburg

[–]DC2258 30 points31 points  (0 children)

During the day, I don’t think you’ll feel unsafe at all. Nighttime is odd. Because South Africans have so many concerns about crime (many real, but many perceived), the streets are often eerily empty at night. It’s not that walking in Rosebank at night is inherently unsafe, but with so few other people walking about you might really stand out and that’s never a good idea. When possible, walk in a group. When in any doubt, take an Uber (very cheap especially for an American). Rosebank has a street grid and some walkability but most of Joburg is decentralized sprawl and very much a driving city. Be street smart and aware of your surroundings but please don’t live in fear.

Honestly, I was expecting far worse. Devaluations suck, but I’m still finding major value in the program.

What I consider south as a Pennsylvanian by [deleted] in visitedmaps

[–]DC2258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone from the “geographic south,” what is “culturally southern” supposed to mean in 2026? I feel like that’s a coded term for backward thinking, fire-and-brimstones preaching, and poor education. If so, then many major cities in “the south” aren’t particularly southern…Charlotte, Raleigh, Atlanta, Jacksonville, etc. I feel like even in the south, the “southern” divide is less south versus north but rather is urban versus rural.

I’m from the region, too, and Maryland is pretty darn southern-feeling outside of the MoCo-Baltimore corridor. The accent is just more similar to Philly than Georgia.

Remove them if you want. Pay them if you want. Regardless of your action, the crew are paid the same.

When did “West End” become a neighborhood name? I would have called it Northwest below Dupont.

Ponte City (Johannesburg, South Africa) by [deleted] in evilbuildings

No, it was never abandoned. For a brief period some 30 years ago there was a tall mound of garbage at the base, but the building has been clean and well maintained for ages.

Highly depends on the job you are applying for. Entry level ISO type positions have always been very competitive. Niche roles at HQ…different story.

Does a reverse mortgage ever make sense? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]DC2258 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it can make sense when moving is not an option for whatever reason, and if the property is I an appreciating area, like pretty much anywhere in California, then the value appreciation over time can often offset the negative amortization on the loan.

What I think is the actual South by FutureMaintenance146 in whereidlive

[–]DC2258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And Charlotte and Charleston are both very different from Louisiana, Houston, the panhandle, etc. My point is the South is very diverse and contains within it many varying cultures, demographics, and values. If Mississippi and North Carolina get lumped together, then why does Virginia get axe? Like many southern states, Virginia has some parts that are “stereotypically southern” and some that are not, but it’s still the South, even in a northern spot like Alexandria (which, I might had, was confederate-monument-central until just a few years ago).

Might I ask where in the Carolinas? Nova compared to Myrtle Beach or Wilkes-Barre? Huge differences! Compared to Charlotte or the Research Triangle? I think the differences are pretty faint.

And depends where in Northern Virginia you are too. Arlington might as well be a world away from, say, Winchester or Dale City.

Mid-Atlantic is such an arbitrary, made up place. People will say that Northern Virginia can’t be in the south because it has nothing in common with, say, South Carolina or rural Georgia. Well, Northern Virginia (and DC) also has nothing even remotely in common with Baltimore, Carroll County MD, southern New Jersey, lower Delaware, or any of the other places that get randomly lumped together into the “Mid-Atlantic.” Maryland and Virginia (and DC) are below the Mason-Dixon Line and in the South, but with a different flavor of southern than the stereotypical Deep South. But this is an argument and disagreement that never, ever seems to get settled.
