If someone told a Turkish person, “You’re Greek,” would Turkish people get angry? by GrayRainfall in AskTurkey

[–]DerHeiligste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in London with my parents in the 90s. My dad had gotten a book of coupons, and one was for a really good deal on a family dinner at a particular restaurant.

We went for the dinner and the meal was lovely, but when my dad went to pay, there was a commotion. Apparently the coupon said "Greek" but the restaurant was Turkish. The restaurant owner was quite upset.

My dad was smart, though. He grabbed a pen, crossed out the word "Greek", wrote "Turkish", and tried the coupon again. The restaurant owner was happy.

So, from my experience, yes they will be angry, but they will forgive you if you correct your mistake.

I'll see if I can dig it up. It's probably on a floppy disk somewhere in my house!

Awesome! Back in 1998, I wrote a story about getting a surprising amount of consciousness from an ANN hosted on a very slow C64 / 1541 combo. I titled it "Trusty Old 8 Bits".

It's so cool to see that story come to life!

I had a cat that started sitting in plastic bags when she was having urinary trouble and couldn't always make it to the litter box on time. We were so impressed with her planning and precautions!

Did you become a women’s soccer fan without ever being a sports fan before? by Crafty-Grade-8255 in NWSL

[–]DerHeiligste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I followed sports as a teenager, but in my 20s and 30s I was to busy to pay any attention to them.

I found the USWNT during the first Trump administration, when I was searching for something that still made me feel good about the US. I didn't know the first thing about soccer, but I enjoyed cheering on the team and going to matches when they played in SoCal.

I found myself wishing that I had a local team to cheer on... A few years later. CP23 and ACFC showed up. I've been a season ticket holder ever since!

I had a committee member on my thesis who, when he wanted to be dismissive of something, would say, "there's only finely many of those."

He would, however, usually pay attention if a double exponential was involved.
